Wow, what an epic pre-tournament game. An excellent defense against that brutal rush, although I think the S2's were a mistake. Bombers would have been hard to use, but more effective against the short-range and large forces of OTP and Dragonfire.
I find it ironic that the bottom team, after fending off such ferocious early raiding, lost the game because they had too many raiding-type ships against the top team's fleet-backbone ships.

Yes, but what else could they do? OTP and Dragon were pushing so hard, they just didn't have the time for the dominion to tech up properly!

That was one hell of a retreat by 23 after that first attack.
posted on December 21st, 2011, 12:38 pm
that retreat was ballsy.
23 got a lucky warpin first, two high dps units, centaur and rhode island. i had one of those warpins hit me once, i had shrikes as well. the shrikes died just as painfully. he was lucky to get the rhode island kill.
i think 3 defining ship losses for megaman were the early rhienn that got right outside the yard then just stopped (probably due to replaceweapon phase plates). then later a leahval did that weird bug and popped straight back out of the yard unrepaired, then much later the repair queue got longer and he couldnt get into the yard despite his micro. his first loss to the long queue was defining, the others werent so much.
he probably couldnt have stopped 23 taking a forward expansion with his ship choice. he could have forced 23 to buy the actual turret though. he also got spooked by the warpin sound, he stopped mining, even though the attack wasnt coming soon. if he'd scouted a little better he could have kept mining longer.

I must say that the shrikes really helped in early game
I actually managed to get an officer rank shrike which let me shred through the rhode island if I remember correctly. Either way, the pulse-based ships definitely were a liability later in the game, but the shrikes stuck around long enough to force him out of monsoons

actually you had 2 shrikes when the rhode island was still alive (it came in very first warpin), neither shrike was highly ranked. the rhode island died in it's first battle. shrikes do really good damage to rhode island, as did the 2 rhienns you had around at the time.
i think you got that rhode island kill because 23 didnt retreat the ship fast enough, he might have been paying more attention to getting pings.
problem is you didnt get enough kills with the shrikes on the early monsoons (especially during that crazy retreat accross the map, you could have chased right to his yard and got the final shots as his monsoon turned to dock). after the early game, fleets got too big for shrikes to survive, and i'm not 100% convinced that phase plates rhienns auto target tank for shrikes. maybe 23 was being clever and forcing fire on the shrikes to avoid wasting fire on the phase plates. once he started adding more than 3 intreps to his fleet i think you should have straight up leahval spammed him. sounds cold, but he got lots of nice warpins, very few e1s, and leahvals are the answer to nebs and intreps.
and as yandon said, you had a crap ton of tri, you could have tried a sneaky 3rd expansion just for dil, and put your expansion tri miners on it.

An excellent game. I still don't know how I feel about the map, it's just so BIG but maybe it just requires a different playstyle. It's harder to take back the initiative after your opponent gets it, especially feds with warping reinforcements. I agree that the best idea would be to mine the entire map, as this would either give you an economic advantage or force the enemy to give up just a little bit of pressure, enough to escape the lockdown.
Still, Megaman lost 3 ships to yard bugs, a rhienn and 2 leahvals. Just that much can be a deathblow for a Romulan player.

I actually lost 4
A Rhienn got popped out of the queue from the replaceweapon.

I think the only problem I have with Malta Malta Malta is that lone expansion midway between the bases; it seems like whoever grabs it first has a massive advantage... and Feds have faster cons. Maybe if the mid exp were less appealing somehow (tri-only?), that would work to even the scales.

Hey everyone, I wanted to apologize for the lack of commentary's over the past five months, I have been very busy, and just have not had any time to do replays. However I hope to find the time to consistently throw up some replays. So finally, here is a great game between Crisis and Dragonfire in which they help me commentate on the replay.
For those who are wondering the players can only here the questions I pose to them specifically, and in turn, they cant hear their opponents responses. So they have no idea what their opponent is saying, or the questions I am posing to their opponent. Also I must apologize, I forgot to put my graphics on high before the commentary, so It's not as pretty (try to run it on 720p on youtube), but it should be fairly clear.

Let's bump this over the annoying spambot!
I wonder whether transwarp would have tipped the balance against those slow-moving cehlaers. Earlier on, that is. By the time it came along, Dragonfire had ~7-8 warbirds, more than enough to overwhelm a borg early-game fleet.

lol at the end where dragonfire misclicked and disruptor bombarded his own ship.
