hey folks.

i was playing around with this version the last days.. and it seems i understood the basic-changes with the avatar system and the techtree, compared to v2.0 or the stock game. just to get a feeling for it, since the release of v3.0 is getting closer.
but, i got to say, i got some serious issues with the "new economy", agains hard AIs of course, cause the other 2 seem to be to easy. but against the hard AI its really a pain in the ass.

i usually play with the basic settings, so no "doubled ressources" or "faster building" or all that stuff.
so...

first of all, speaking of ressources.

its overall pretty expensive, no matter, ships, stations or upgrades are regularly so cost intensive, that you have a hard time to get a foot in. i know its probably to get rid of the stock "first shiptype spam rush", but in the end it turns out, that you got to have 3 moons each of the two ressources, to get started building up a reasonable fleet (with at least one upgrade for one of the shiptypes available).
i think there should some balancing be done to the tree-system, like enabling the first yard after the ressource station or something like that. and the overall costs reduced a bit.

which leads me to the second point, overall ship performances and compared to the oponent ones of the same classes.

i dont know, maybe im doing something important the wrong way. for example:

its not hard for me the first minutes with romulans or klingons, but i just dont get it with f.e. the dominion. spamming bugships doesnt work, cause the moment when i get a small fleet (lets say a fleet of 8 ships) together, the AI crosses my path with a small well mixed fleet and tears my ships apart, that they dont/cant stand a minute or two. after that i tried the same, with a mixed fleet of bugships, bombers and cruisers (or frigates or how they are spelled, just forgot it :S). and till then the AI has a better mixed fleet and the techupgrades, which i cant seem to afford, cause i always have to get supply and the ships out quickly. even if i teamup with another dominion hard AI, its still the same. till the lategame/endgame, when i'm able to build bigger fleets with all ships mixed, if i get a chance at all, cause usually they raid my base before i get a chance to do so.
so basicly it turns out that way, that i have to spam turrets in their way to my base to build up fleets big enough to wipe everything out in one single turn, which costs a hell of moons and supplies. at that stage i got like 4moons each ressource or even more if available (depends on the map) and like 3-4 freighters on each moon, plus all the stations etc.
maybe im just "not the dominion player", but im still guessing around what i'm doing wrong here, cause it seems, the dominion AI is a pretty hard oponent, like the feds are, especially when they are in a team with another faction.

and i had kind of the same problem on the side of the romulans, just not in the beginning, but in mid-game with all the midclass-refit-ships. so i have to spam shrikes and leahvals (or how they are called) till i can get my hands on the deridex or norexians, cause the rhienn and generix etc. with the refits and techupgrades are out of bounds from the cost/effectivity perspective.

so.. i dont know if its my playstyle, or if its a design/balance issue, but this is my experience so far.

opinions anyone?

'cause the rhienn and generix etc. with the refits and techupgrades are out of bounds from the cost/effectivity perspective.'

Running a fleet of Rhienn class units upgraded is an awesome approach, they are super effective.

not really, if they are heading against a mixed fleet of fedships with defiants, nebulas, steamrunners, couple akiras, intrepids and so on. to be exact, if i hadnt the big fleet of nex's and deri's in the back, they would have wiped me out completly.
but, well, thats just me. maybe im doing something wrong *shrug*

Probably not, but I mean how many Rhienn type units can you get for the price of those?

Spamming destroyers is by far the most effective form of combat in V3Pr ESPECIALLY Bops.

I love spamming those Kang class ships for the klingons, specially late game, if you have enough of those they can rip through any ship.  They have fast attack with good damage and good shield strength for their size and cost.

true about the klingons.
but to be honest, i always see myself building Birds of Prey till the point where i could fill whole map with them on seek n destroy mode lol.
but for real.. whats up with the dominion? is there a trick i missed? or should i put my focus more on the capitolships? i mean.. whats a good fleetmix for the doms? for early game and mid game?
just got no clue about them, but i like the ship designs.
when the final version arrives, i'll prolly stick to the borg as usual, but since their not there in the PR version, im trying out new things.

For the Dominion you need to use brute force with big ships and use small ships as fodder, have your enemies attack your smaller ships while having your big ships provide the dps of the fleet, a really good small ship too use would be the breen cruiser, it can take a huge beating and its great against smaller ships, the breen battleship is also a great ship, so try to make your fleets, breen cruiser, breen battleship, dominion battleship, and a few support cruisers and you should be good, the breen ships take a huge beating, great ships and provide great shields for your larger ships so they last longer in battle, but usually strategy is based off of who your enemy is, find out what they like building, usually the AI likes a few select ships then find counters too them, once you do that you are set.  Each race is different so you just need to try to find good combos against certain races.  Good luck
