This strat works best with unlimited resources and fast ship building.
As soon as the game starts, build two shipyards. Get both producing interceptors as soon as they go up.
Then, use one of the construction ships to begin making phaser turrets around your base, and the other to make Unimatrix. When unimatrix goes up, get one shipyard making spheres and interceptors. Tech up to assimilators. Once you build one full squad of Assimilators, send about 3/4 of your spheres and interceptors to make a diversion near the fed base. While the fed fleet is fighting yours, sneak the assimilators in and bust down the turrets. Auto-assimilate the construction ship. Have the assimilators escort the ship back to base, when it is safely there, send the assimilators to assist the spheres and interceptors.
Make sure you have plenty of phaser turrets when you make your diversion. You should also make a first strike against something important like a shipyard, and then retreat. MAke sure ALL TECH IS PLACED IN THE CORNER POCKET OF THE MAP. I cannot stress this enough. TECH GOES IN CORNER POCKET!!!!!!
All the while, you are teching up to Advanced Yards. When the Advanced Yards go up, build some cubes and tact cubes. Begin constructing Fed techtree. Use 5 credits on galaxys, the other 5 on steamrunners.
Ta da. And assimilate as many sovereigns and steamrunners as you can.
