Going by the show, the gateways seemed rather random. You also have the ships security to deal with.

Plus, any tech (no matter what it is or how advanced it is) can be countered, imagine using that gateway just to find they manage to screw the exit side of it... Would you be willing to use it if they managed to modify their Shields to act like a Stargates Iris or would you prefer a ship?

well, they dont have ships, but prolly they had ships in the time they existed. Bu t they vanished ... lets gues why ...

Both past and present Iconians would have ships for the reasons suggested. If they didn't, they would come across as being as arrogant and retarded as the Lanteans from Stargate.

I can see the Iconians as arrogant, but not that dumb.

You just reminded me of the episode where they found an ancient time machine that didn't work on a planet which the ancients let die. Couldn't they have, you know, just beamed onto a ship and left? No reason to go back in time for one lousy planet.  Star Trek has a major difference of providing possible reasons the iconians lost power, with the number of independent space travelling races in Star Trek. Stargate just made it seem like the ancients kind of died off without any threats or anything and disappeared from the Milky Way all of a sudden.  Maybe they all ascended at once? Nah, more likely they blew themselves up.

there was a plague that killed them all, SG1 got it in the episode with the frozen ancient in ice. o'neill needed a tokra to cure him.

Teh wraith have bugs and organic tech, you can't beat bugs and organic tech, it's just too strange to lose to normal stuff.  Really the wraith look like they'd barely be a threat to the ancients with their fragile ships but the way science fiction works the ancients get beat by bugs  .  My theory as to how they could have actually lost: they must have spent too much time making all that worthless crap on Atlantis (like the auto-ascension machine) when they should have been building some more ships, on top of that they saw ST:Enterprise air for the first time and decided they were better off dead (or ascended.)

you can have an uzi againt knives, but if it is you vs. 100, and you only have 50 bullets, you aint going to win.

the ancients were keeping the wraith at bay, but it got boring, like a game level you cant get past, they got bored with it, and moved on to other things
