well in real space situations, a station is always his hit by small meteorites and debris from satalites so i don't things ship should explode that easily because of flying debis. basically the Startrek ships have good shields to prevent damage from debris and i guess ship hulls are strong aswell (see voyager that flew through a twin neutran star ( don'tyknow the episode)
so i don't like the idea

A ships shields can't handle thing the size of Norexan wins hit them apparently, so only large ships could make any real damaging debris.

I think there are enough examples from the source material (ST:N, lots of battles from DS9) of debris from damaged/exploding (even ramming) ships doing significant damage to other ships.
One could argue the material used to create hulls is mumble times harder than space rocks, and therefore more of a threat.
Again, there might be a one in five change of it happening, adding risk, but taking away the chain reaction.

I doubt a few shockwaves would put as much strain on a computer as a few models or even the awesome explosion effects there are now. Collision damage by debris isn't directly possible anyway, so not much to worry about here. And there ARE shockwaves as it is now. They'd just recieve one or two additional text lines.
So, does anyone have an idea whether repulsion forces work in explosion shockwaves? Or the aforementioned damage to engines? I'd like to see that a lot more than just damage.
