Heya, found this ages ago and finally wanted to post it to see if anyone else thinks it coul dbe an interesting addition to the borg.
So, I found this on Memory Alpha about the Arctic One in regeneration: "In the writer's commentary for "Regeneration" on the ENT Season 2 DVD, the episode's writers revealed that the reason the ship's mass kept growing was that the ship would've eventually evolved into a Borg sphere, implying that the Borg don't have traditional shipyards, but instead take ships they attack and assimilate them. This information wasn't conveyed in the episode however."
So that gave me the idea of maybe assimilated ships could be upgraded a few times through several classes until it finally becomes a Borg ship. When the ship is turned in-to a Borg class it takes up a certain number of veteran slots.
Example if a shuttle is assimilated then a few resources are spent upgrading its weapons and hull until it becomes a detector. This upgrade to the detector takes 1 veteran slot and then its possible to begin upgrading it to the next stage, an interceptor which takes time (as the ship slowly grows in size, kinda life the 8472 mechanic just the ship isn't defenceless), resources, CC and the maximum should maybe be a Sphere? The best reason for upgrading instead of building the ship as a new complete Borg ship would be these ships can change as the game changes, when you're inthe early game you have your interceptors etc and when time goes on they can follow you in-to mid game.
Any thoughts/ideas on making it better?

i dont like it. i just think its ridiculous to turn a non borg ship into a borg ship. thats not efficient lol.

Wasn't the most common view that they scrap the ship for resources to 'grow' their own with?

yea i dont like this idea either. i think its more borg to take assimilated ships break them down, and add to the current ship to turn it into something more. kinda like say a sphere assimilating enough ships so as to turn itself into a cube from the broken down assimilated ships. i think this is more borg like.

Well I think anything from ENT is silly to apply to real trek, that said I sorta like this idea.
That said, I think turning a ship into a borg ship is silly, ships dont generate matter from nothing.
While I could see a Borg ship slowly transporting on raw material (IE: all ships are collectors) and growing that way, I dont see an easy way to do that for flops w/o doing a full rebalance/rebuild of the borg.
However, taking assimd ships, and converting them to vessel components which can be used to build larger vessels would be cool. Prehaps make it a slower but more efficent method than just decomissioning them.
Prehaps even have some defenseve platforms that the chunks can be used to create

If you know how bees build their homes, it isn't that unbelievable that Borg build their own designs slowly around smaller assimilated vessels. Besides that, I don't think Borg need to do so. They may or may not do this situational though, like they tried with the Enterprise E in FC.

I would like both an option to build a Borg ship from assimilated one and parts of other assimilated or destroyed one, as well as one to simply use the assimilated vessels as resources. Can do either, so everybody's happy (well, most at least, except for the ones who hate one option or both.)

Agreed, a do both option would be cool.
Prehaps have ships from assimd vessels not cost any connections since it's using pre-existing drones and such ?
Heres one way to do it..........
Assim ship
Assimd upgrade 1- Fully Assimd- Ship gains the standard issue borg specials, as well as borg weapons replacing the stock ones. Stats for the ship go up a tad, prehaps loss of speed and turn rate.
Assimd upgrae 2- Component - The vessel's drones begin to break it down and ready it to be used as part of a new larger vessel.
Past that, you use a scout cube or a dode as the 'core' of the new vessel.
Scout cubes, once enough asimd ships are added, become a cube for free. Dode's as a core produce a sphere, or other types.

I think the redo will remove CCs, as it does somehow fix the CC accumulation rate troubles the Borg have.
If it doesn't remove CCs, I would not like assim'd ships to get a free CC cost, as this could severely affect balance, maybe a slightly reduced CC, with more reduction for more ships assimilated (or maybe assimiliating a ship gives a little free CC after a certain amount of time (for Borg drone-controlling equipment to be setup.))
