I haven't played Fleet Ops in a while, and it was great fun to reinstall it. The role of the turrets still bothers me, however. It just doesn't seem that other than in parts of the neutral zone and one system in the Dominion war they were used. When an attack seemed iminant, the answer was always to upgrade weapon systems on a space station or send in a few big ships, rather than build hundreds of turrets. I like the ship to ship or ships to station action better than turrets anyway.

I guess the first question would be why don't they use turrets in the 24th century? Then, here are some possibilities:

Each turret costs a strategy point, but is more powerful.
Turrets require highly advanced technology.
Turrets can only be in orbit of a planet

Instead of turrets, space stations (that also include repair bays) have weapons. I still like swarm of ships rather than long range weapons attacking stations. That is faster and more exciting.

Could you have decaying turrets? In the event of an attack, could you build quickly and cheaply quite a few turrets, that erode and self-distruct after a certain amount of time?

That would correspond with the engineers running around before an attack getting everything ready.

I even wonder if you could combine turrets with mining ships (don't laugh!), making them slower, with more capacity, and more expensive. That would correspond to the shifting of activiites from "normal" to attack mode.

I use turrets to protect a low priority mining colony or up front to warn and hold off troops when fleets are moving my way to regroup my forces and put up a defence perimiter,

however i do like, as I posted before, the use of a Starbase with some heavy weapons and a repair dock

Realism vs gameplay, gameplay wins this round, gotta have turrets.

i know that you would say this, cause i played against you once, and i remember your buildings right in front of my own base

but i gotta say, i dont like em that much too. i never saw some in the movies or series, just a minefield in DW. but that was odd.

i like this idea of loosing the darn turrets, instead give the sensor array a bigger/larger range.

I'm still bugged that I can't build ten cloaked construction ships and have them all build turrets just out of sensor range of an enemy base in v3. Surprise! Love, the Romulan Star Empire

I think there is the opportunity to develop a modification of RTS game play. Gameplay is key, but if looses the essence of the series, why not just play Rise of Nations?

Are short-term/decaying turrets possible?

Why would turrets decay? They don't make them out of tin foil.

as far as i know stellar defence stations are mentioned in Star Trek many times (for example along the klingon or romulan neutral zone), but we never got to see one except the evil things of the cardassians.
In my opinion defence stations are far more common then fighters :)
