hey guys i was thinking of a new ship for the romulans.

im sure everyone has watched the new ST movie (DUH we all trekkies here), in the movie there was that romulan ship that just seemed to freaking spam missiles at the enterprise. so i was thinking it would be great if the romulans had a warbird whos only attack was torpedos and it has a fast fire rate and damage for those torpedoes. it would make a really good ship to counter borg(ie lots of torpedoes), obviously the ship should be very durable, and perhaps because it is so durable and torpedo focused, it should not have a cloak.

what u guys think?

Well, the romulans already have a torpedo refit for the rhienn, and plenty of good battleships (once they get re-balanced in the Romulan redo ).  I like the idea of adding a similar style torpedo as a special weapon, though.  The one the Narada used was kind of like a MIRV, where it fired a torpedo, and then a bunch of warheads broke off for maximum damage.  It would be cool to see that effect done in FO, maybe as a replacement for the Erisis' "Slap-on-the-wrist" Array. :D

well i was thinking that just how the Cehlaer is only beam focused hows bout making a vessel thats only torpedo focused. but a torpedo focused vessel like i just stated above. rheinns arent durable in the sense that a big D is durable...

No Rhienns aren't durable, you're right.  The Big D is durable until a few Kvorts, Intrepids, or anything else shows up :D.  They are still pretty fragile because you aren't able to field them in numbers early on.  Big D's are really the only practical Torpedo vessels you can hope to field though.  Torpedo Refits are just too fragile and expensive and you can really get D's out faster given that they don't have to be researched.

I agree that the Rommies don't have a good torpedo-based vessel right now.  I find that they really suffer against large Borg ships like Spheres and Pyramids.

But like Mal said, hopefully they will be more balanced in the Redo :).

i dont think the solution relies in balancing(although yes it would definitely help the situation to a large degree), i think the solution mainly lies in creating a durable, torpedo dedicated vessel(at least thats my view)

The romulans are already on disadvantage in power and then you want to solve it with torpedos?
Beam weapons age good against shields, torpedos are good against hull. In order to take down an enemy, 90% of the defense is calculated by the shields. So torps are not very effective.

So you would be on disadvantage against the fed, klingons and dominion with that ship. Even on large scale attacks with big D's, they werent very effective. They should last a little longer.

but the point is that ship shouldnt stand alone it should be in a mix with other ships. its job should be to provide heavy torpedo support

I'm not sure where this torps being good against hull thing came from.  All weapons do the same damage to shields as they do to hull.  It just depends on whether they're a destroyer/cruiser/battleship in terms of modification.  And the passives of course.  To be honest, torpedo-only ships aren't super hot unless they're attacking capital ships.  The mix is so much better, because at the very least, you're going to do some damage.  The Klingons, have a lot of single weapon type ships, the feds have a lot of phaser and torpedo combos, and the Romulans have mainly beam and pulse type combos.  I think part of that is to give each race some individuality.

Besides, you really want to do well against the Borg, Leahvals are really nice against spheres, with their passive and bursty damage.  With enough of them and a bit of luck, you can kill a sphere before a player can click the regen button. ^-^
