The return of Self-Destruct

Hey all,

Basically. I propose the return of the self destruct option.

Yesterday I played a game as Romulans against Dominion. Got to a point where the Merciless Dominion started to spam with warships. So heres my situation:

No threat to HQ
High threat to remote mining facilities.
Low threat to Task Force 3 (3 D'deridex + 1 Veteran Tavara.)

So, I pay all attention to the mining facility, not noticing that the 3 D'deridex had been destroyed and the Tavara had been boarded by Transporter Assault. 120 crew left.

What to do?

Well it had no engines or weapons left, so nothing.

However, if self-destruct was available I would quite happily have destroyed it rather than give it to the Dominion scum!  :pinch:

So, some of you may be saying, well whats the point in transporter assault and assimilation if you're just going to destroy the ship?

Well, with all the balancing changes taking place, now would be appropriate to stop the Borg assimilating Veteran Tavara's in my opinion.

Ok ok, so lets say a Cube is assimilating an Intrepid, self destruct? NO

I reccommend that only Veteran class vessels mayhave the ability, along with possibly only battleships?

Sorry for the block of text, needed to have a good reason for its implementation.

Honestly, if the borg assimilate a Tavara?  Big deal.  They have the needed capacity to steal that thing, you're looking at alot worse than them sending it back at you.  Hell, the damned thing will probably end up guarding their base, where they are mass-producing assimilators, spheres, diamonds, and cubes.

Whereas in reality, the AI tends to save everything. It can't differentiate between Tavara and Cube really...

maybe give all vessels self destruct, but make it do little damage to nearby ships so it isnt useful as a weapon. and give transporter assault ships a chance to disable self destruct. we saw in canon trek several times where self destruct is disabled. basics springs to mind. maybe link the self destruct to the weapons subsystem, so when weapons are disabled u cant self destruct.

maybe also give boarding ships a higher chance of disabling the self destruct/weapons subsystem, maybe give the borg a boost on this because they are masters of the tactic. maybe also give higher ranks a higher chance of doing the self destruct.

on another note i never understood why when the self destruct was disabled the engineer couldnt be ordered to manually overload the warp core, or even phaser it, barclay said with a type 2 phaser it would take a couple minutes to breach voyagers core, maybe with a rifle it would take less time.

EDIT: typo

Well, I don't want it as a weapon at all. I just don't want Veteran class vessels falling into enemy hands. And knocking out the Self-Destruct sequence would take a hell of a beating.
It took the USS Enterprise-E crashing into the Scimitar to knock theres out...

in voyager basics, the self destruct was knocked out even though voyagers shields never collapsed. the secondary command processors were dead, whats wrong with the primary ones doing the self destruct? anyways this was acheived by attacking one system a lot. the kazon mini-raiders that were used are pretty weak compared the species in FO so i'm sure a ship designed solely for boarding purposes could have a chance at disabling self destruct. not a certainty though.

EDIT: I agree with you that stopping veterans being captured easily is desirable, there has to be a balance between everything self destructing all the time, and an actual use for boarding other ships.

I'm fine with Veteran Battleships being given self-destruct, perhaps, but nothing else in my opinion as it is too big a blow against Assimilation or Boarding in my opinion. :)

yh that would be a good compromise. i like assimilation and boarding being possible.

Please don't nerf the veteran hunting. I love to assimilate veterans. As if you assimilate a normal ship it will never - ever level up. They will just become part of the collective and that's it. So please let the Borg be the Borg. :borg:  :borg:  :borg:

Another self destruct thread. :P  Almost as popular as galaxy and sov threads.  I'm not a big fan of self destruct because taking over a vessel in multiplayer is hard enough, we don't need to make it even harder.  Just pay attention and you won't lose your vets. :whistling:

In this upcoming patch you will be able to use the tractor beam on your constructor to tow any derelicts to your starbase where they can be repaired, which will solve the problem of a ship losing its engines. ^-^

Indeed, should make it more difficult to capture ships that completely lose engines and are worth going out and grabbing :)

I agree. Give Vets - or just Vet Battleships, as you said - the ability to self-destruct, maybe give Borg ships a self-destruction module (they do seem keener on the concept), but that's it. Taking over an enemy ship is hard enough without them blowing to pieces while your earnest young redshirts beam aboard.
