this idea whood make it so the only ship with wepons you can bild is a detecter (scout) when you upgrade you have the abulity to have the scout tern in to a biger ship.

i have seen uther ships in a2 bild stuff so if the scout bilt arownd it self and than the computer removed the scout after the upgrade i think it coud work.

the ship whould be frozon wile upgartiong. it whould be kinda like 8472 or what ever thay are cald.

i think this idea whould make the borg like thay are on the show.

all ships whould have the abilty to tern in to the next leval up incloding asimalted ships.

what do you think?

Well it would be good if ships could upgrade. Not just Borg ships. All ships.

yeah it would be great if you could upgrade all ships, or a few i each species, like you could add some more phaser banks and torpedo tubes, or even choose between photon and quantum torpedos.

I've actually done a lot of thinking on this subject. I really like the upgrade-ability of the Roms and I've been considering what it may look like in the next version.
in my perspective...

I think that if the Borg, just for this example, could self-upgrade technology on a single-ship basis you would really have to consider which race gets what upgrades. The game is very balanced now,
if the Borg are allowed to upgrade their smaller vessels too soon in the game they may become the sure bet over all other races. If they have too few upgrades it could become too costly to perform fleet wide.
The Romulans have a basic upgrade system, and it makes a lot of sense because their ships need to count for a lot more given their inherently limited numbers.

to put it another way
what if you could upgrade a Bird of Prey to carry Quantum Torpedoes ?
Would anyone even play the Borg who are so reliant on Cubes, AKA torpedo bait?

If we're gonna do upgrades with that much choice
1 tech heavy races should get more upgrades
but
2 they should be required to have a separate and costly Upgrade ship yard, with the exception of the Klingons whom could upgrade at their standard yards, and the Romulans who would build their ships to be upgraded due to limited assets.
AND
the Romulan Tal Shiar should be able to copy ship upgrades as part of their Intelligence Center... as the Feds will always have more ships and more money, and the Borg... are the Borg, and will steal tech from anything that moves.

i actually like the sound of that, and it seems you put quite a bit of thought into it too.

Well, I really like the refit scheme. It makes a lot of sense, especially for the Borg & Feds to build a ship for basic service and then adapt it to meet a specific threat. I think the other races would do the same, more because of limited resources.

I think that the creativity of the player can come a lot more into play than which ships to build or how to lay out your base, only because these things tend to be very dependant on what you're facing and which race you've chosen.

When I play the Feds, and I'm up against the Klingons, in the way I play every ship between the Saber and Excelsior 2 is basically canon foder. The Saber has speed and range, the Excelsior provides a proper beatdown.
But,
if I could put torps on the Akira class,
or sacrifice the Tri-Cobalt for longer range with the Intrepid
More ships would continue to be useful throughout the various stages of the game. As it is, everything else just waits for one Large attack where I throw everything in, rather than a continuous running fight you'd expect when fighting Klingons.

to say nothing of fitting another nacelle and huge phasor to the Galaxy class
I mean that would simply be unfair
