Monvoring thrusters.
Problem: getting all my ships in just the right place.
Solution: use the arrow keys to tap ships and let you do strafing.
IF this is posable I think it would add a new diminution to the game. All you would need to do is set key combose to do this.

Sounds nice though I'm not really sure if it would be necessary.
But as with all options I wouldn't bother if it would be available.

the only reason i can think you would need this is for POTD etc

Or maybe if you follow a hold-the-line-strategy and you want a wall of ships to secure your base. But also for POTDs it would be a nice feature.

not against this but wouldn't cry if its not implemented. (even IF possible)

if you had a wall of ships to 'hold the line' you would need a dont move but still shoot command. kinda like green and red together.
And this is embarrassing but i don't know what POTD stands for. lol If its some station, we already have the arrow keys for that.

A POTD is a picture of the day.

Actually there is one. Try this (1) button in the menu where you can choose the alert-stats etc. At least in my understanding it tells the ships to stay where they are and not to move in combat. (I use it with my artillery when I'm taking out turrets or something like that and it works fine. The ships don't move at all until I tell them to.)
If your fleet's stat is yellow alert and they are attacked they will hold the line then.... and protect your refinery.. your wormehole or whatever until reinforcements can arrive or until you built a dozen of turrets behind the ships...

(1)

I was thinking that on yellow they moved. on green they dont fire. i may be remmebering A2 though not FO.

Green alert status means they do not open fire unless you give them a target and tell them to attack even if they are under fire. If they are on yellow alert they will open fire if they are attacked.
The image I posted shows a different button dealing with the movement autonomy during combat.
So, if your ships are on yellow alert they will open fire if they are attacked but they won't move if the movement autonomy is set to its minimum.

If you want sexy fleets you need formations. If you don't care about how sexy your fleet looks while crushing your opponent, you don't need formations.
Formations are sexy.
But they can be more than sexy if used right:
Imagine a Steamrunner in front of your attack-fleet. She'll get frakked right after the first contact with the enemy.
Imagine a Steamrunner flying behind a wall of Defiants and Excelsior IIs. She'll frak the enemy's base after the Defiants and Excelsiors fought free her way.
So: Formations are not only sexy, they are safe. And what goes better than sexy and safe?

But indeed: If formations are available you don't need to tab anything in position because the formations are supposed to make the ships fly there for themselves.
If someone knows Medieval II: I'd like to have the variety of formations you've got there in FO. Just because it's sexy and safe.

Formations are fail in online flops.
Unless you surprise the enemy in the middle of one with a cloak, but you see... most pulse disruptor, front arc only ships require that front arc and ships will be reluctant to close the distance in a formation, especially larger vessels and mixed fleets.
