I have been trying to think of a way to add a bunker structure to the game and other than mounting detectors to the dode relay i didnt come up with anything (wait a second that could be cool)
However i started to think about how certain things work together and i formed a new idea that im calling symbiosis. The idea is that a certain item would be constructed at the symbiont builder and then i would be placed on an ship and it would add a powerful new passive. I was planning this for one of the future races but i realized that this could even be used for one of the existing races like the borg to give them added flexibility and make up for their lack of a rankup system.
As for the implementation i think that the symbionts should not be very expensive (maybe the price of a destroyer) but they should take a while to construct. The bigger the ship is the more symbionts it would be able to mount (2 for small, 3 for medium, 4 for large) Also certain combinations of symbionts would trigger a new more powerful effect e.g. 2 defense oriented symbionts would make a new stronger defense passive. Please comment and argue away (mostly nicely of course)

biologically for the noxter it makes sense
i agree with jan. for current species maybe not. i guess for the borg it may work, but less than for the noxter.
you do realise what you ask is impossible

it was a target to shoot for lol
It wouldnt have to be an actual organic symbiosis it could be a mechanical type like installing a special shield emitter that works well with certain other systems.

Doesn't this sound like a passive-exclusive version of the Refit system the Romulans currently specialize in?

The rommies have only one refit per ship and the borg have their modules and are fixed then. The symbiont for the noxter would be like a module for the borg - but this is interesting. Maybe we dont have dedicated symbionts but"learning ones". So you put them together with the main ship and they coul grow to a stronger lifeform. At the beginning it would be very weak, like a bug or even weaker (K'Tinga), but experienced ones can make a symbiosis with a "holding" ship so it could get such as powerful as a cube.
This may work... also for the passives. I think its a great idea and if worked out, we may have a little system for the noxter.
