I have seen many good points as to why it should be added, and why it shouldn't be added. I happen to remember that in the original came, the nebula had the point defense phaser ability. Which was specifically made to shoot down torps headed towards it or a ship in the group. It could be pertinent to maybe look at that aspect instead of a full on weapon hard point. In fact for a number of the faction ships. But not all of the ships. Have it as a passive/active ability. Something to turn on and off, such as the Galaxy's three torp spread.
That could quell the masses disdain of not having the aft phaser array. And drop the issue of the other factors nothing aft arrays as well. Or maybe it was a mod that added the PDP on the nebula. Either way, that would add the fix requested but not make it so they were just always there.
If you turn the PDP on, there's a drop in pulse phaser power and damage to compensate for having the PDP. Or even make it so the PDP does that but also IF a ship gets close enough (CQC) range it will act as a normal phaser but still has to be turned on if you want it.

in canon(i almost never use this kind of argument, but, whatever^^) it was once indirectly shown, that shooting with a phaser onto a torpedoe wont really help the ship to live on...
i jst dont find the memory alpha site of this fact right now XD

Shooting a Torpedo with a close-range Phaser will make it explode, a Torpedo detonating at close range wit make the ship nearby explode.

Not by the AR2 standards it won't. Realistically, yes. You would think so. Again..they had the specific nebula class with point defense phaser. Doing no damage to the defending ship. That's one of those balance factors.

I dont think it really needs an aft phasor. Just increase its movement speed and turning rate.

Theother thread that asked for a Phaser mentioned balance concern. Plus giving the Defiant an aft Phaser means it's aft Torpedo launchers probably won't be far behind.

I know it did but it was a different idea here. Like the difference in point defense phaser and an aft phaser for the defiant. This would be a special ability upgrade.

once upon a time, the only special weapon the Defiant had was a mine it could drop. while the klingon mixed tech shipyard gives you that ability, in origional A1 you had it, so while you were tuck-tailing it and running your little group back to the nearest shipyard, you could drop a group of them to "persuade" any would be persuers to reconsidder.
Still, it would be nice if the FO defiants were not sitting ducks if caught from behind.
wanna throw on an aft phaser, ok, but why not an aft shooting torpedo. Ever notice when you have a borg scout ship and your too close to whatever your shooting at, the little ball will actually pass it, turn around and come back to hit its target. Like a REAL guided phonton (or whatever) torpedo should.
so why cant the defiant drop a few in the aft direction?

you know, when a ship follow syou, you can make a big turn and attack in a flyby.. i dont see the prob here, especially because the defiant packs quite a punch..

If a Defiant has got to the point where it's been forced to run, it's not likely to be as dangerous as it normally is...
