How about an option to Warp in a "HERO" for the game. Much like the reinforcements,or the experimental ship, how about having a super powered HERO jump in a sector. By hero, see below
anyone who has played Star Wars: Galatic Battlefront, knows what i am talking about!
Federation: Have a Veteran class ENTERPRISE, DEFIANT,INTREPID etc...etc.. with special weapons and tactics perhaps open a temporal rift and have the 3 nacell enterprise from "all good things" or Ryker's uss TITAN....
Klingon: have a ship or several ships Empowered by K'les or by some klingon general of sorts....
Borg: have a Special Borg Sphere controlled by the Borg Queen---perhaps assimilate any ships with shields dropped!--
Romulin:perhaps have a nero character or perhaps sela come in again, super powered ship yadda yadda
Dominion:??? no idea. did not watch DS9 enough HAAHHA!

I think it's been asked before, with the response that the avatar choice at the beginning represents your hero.

Wouldn't work. The tactical advantage of the Sovereign compared to the Luna class is well, astronomical. And I don't really regard Riker as a 'HERO'. Technically, he's never command a ship in terms of cannon, its never happened on screen. He's assume command, but never officially been promoted
Gotta love the Big Bear though
Anyway, it wouldn't work. Only if you had one Hero per species. And then what? Locutus for the Borg? Taking down a Tactical Cube is hard enough, without it having an even bigger tactical advantage.

Is that not the basics of a mod? to make it do what you want? you could always make them warp in only once per game. and warp out after a short time.... perhaps limit the function to federaton only? lots of ways to work this!

Au contraire, there's a very limited way to work this
It couldn't be early game as it would be stupidly powerful, and the Hero for each species would have significant tactical differences. Martok's Negh'Var v USS Titan?
Just doesn't work, and I'd fear it would disrupt the balance. If you notice in the Warp-In options, there's an 'Experimental' option. More ships are to be added to that other time

As much fun as Hero Ships could be, I see four major problems with this idea:
1)the already mentioned balancing issues;
2)finding heroes of nearly equal greatness for all factions;
3)the timeline issues: Fleetops takes place some time after the shows. So which of the heroes and ships we know are still in active service?
4)the most frustrating thing about well-known-hero units: You all remember how frustrating it was when Odysseus got killed by some villagers in Age of Mythology? Or General MacArthur by some random grenade in Empire Earth?
Now imagine the Enterprise getting destroyed by some random turret... Wouldn't it be sad?
So I'm against implementing heroes.

Some nice points picard. Although it would make an interesting screenshot watching the Enterprise being destroyed by a Talon

I have on of those Epic Phail screenshots like that...
Well, you guys could do what I do... which is cheat a Defiant, a Sovereign and an Intrepid class to veteran and toy around with the HP, SP and Shields, but not so much as to overpower them. That and I put the cannotdie option on (Anyone remember the A1 Siege of Sector 001 as the Borg? For those that do, remember how a pain in the neck it was to try to assimilate the Avenger [Worf] or the Preomition [Demmings]? Or just to kill them it was hard)

'Could' be done is not be confused with 'Should' be done or 'Shall' be done. The Dev's have expressed their feelings regarding Hero ships and the consensus is that they are not going in the game, we have veterans instead . Luckily everyone is free to create their own mod though

What if the ships that warped in, came in at random ranks? It would be more realistic I think(though a tad bit un balanced)

Well if realism were a factor, one would expect that you could get 'any' ship in the federation arsenal. Not just Excel, Nebula, yadda...
Maybe even a vulcan ship? it's supposed to be a distress call after all. I am not advocating this, merely illustrating a point...

same here. it would still be cool to see some crappy Alien ships to come to your rescue though

i dont think the vulans have a military force, just a merchant/science fleet of crappy ships.
i think random ranks would be good, but only up to double silver.
i think allowing buildable ships to warp in would be good, but they should have a much lower chance than the current warp ins, because thats what warp in is about, the oldies like the excel etc maybe only first yard ships can warp in, with simpler ships being more likely such as sabres with akiras being rare. and say a 1% chance of getting a defiant/sovvie.

I wouldn't try to add alien ships, I added a fully rank-compatible D'Kora Marauder in a previous version and its crew transformed into Starfleet officers.
