Remember we have lots of Veterans that have AoE weaponry
. If anybody remembers 3.0.7 and below - or even 3.1.2 and below for the T-15, they'll recall that AoE weaponry is EXTREMELY powerful. Recall all the complaints about the BortaS and Hyperspace Artillery?
Splash damage itself has been considered before, but unless it is extremely rare, it would cause much undue frustration, as well as being deadly to certain factions.

Amen. I do support the "Those ships are really a lot farther away!" argument, excluding some extreme cases.

Im not saying that it has to be necessarily powerful, just maybe a 5 percent chance subsystem failure for when a large station blows up, and a 1 percent when a ship blows up, plus slight damage to the shields, and maybe the effect that the bug has, where when it rams a ship the ship travels backward.
That i think would make it a little more realistic, and all the ships flying backward would be a nice visual.

yh cos that happened all the time in ds9 (!)

it would look ridiculous that every time ships exploded the enemy all got blown back.

A shockwave effect would be nice for the 'largest' structures and vessels exploding, but it should only be minor and graphical; such as the ships caught in it would sway a little. but i do not think that damage should occur because that would be complete chaos...

One more comment to back Dom up on the Splash damage idea:
In most RTS' the late game is dominated by massable units with splash damage. We've seen in past patches how even a single unit gaining too much splash damage can essentially win the game itself. Splash, if it's gonna be used, should be relegated to a unit that is not one used as a baseline vessel and one that's not able to live forever. That's my opinion of how Splash should fit into Flops.
Personally I feel that it works best on Support units or veterans (in limited cases as their stats increase so much).

I still think splash damage would be best on the Borg Cube varients, since it has dogfight-range splash damage in canon.

Ack! heheh, the Cube is already so powerful ... since it takes so many ships in general to take it down I'm just SO adverse to helping it against the masses.

Regarding current AoE weapons, look at them closely. Nanites, FoF, Quadcobalt, AT charges, Hyperspace Artillery...all of them, the graphic is bigger than a Sovvie or Galaxy. Usually, it's about the size of a mining station or a federation science station.
That's not splash damage, that's a big bloody boom that would be the primary threat of an episode in the shows.

I'm not opposed to cube splash damage as tyler suggests, there is definitely evidence to support it. Also, if you're really engaging a cube at dogfight range you are probably toast anyway
