I think that ships should slowly gain speed in Fleetops and not be at top speed in 1 maybe 2 seconds, thats just not cannon, and plus it would make hit and run tactics much more effective. ^_^

Yep, this would be OK.

But if I may upgrade your speed idea.
It would be realy great if you can control each ship's speed with somekind of control button. For example you have a fleet of many ships, and you command them that they go to speed 4. And when you move them they go with different acceleration (original Founder's idea) untill they match that speed 4 and move with same speed. That way if you move them to the far far position, your fleet won't get separated which can be very unfortunate for you .

I like both ideas although not sure if controlling the speed is necesary, seeing as how I want everything going fast and your fleets should be moving at the same general speed anyway.

Well same general speed yes, but they shouldn't get that speed in a sec, this would be potencionally perfect for hit and run attacks

That is the idea actualy. I wan't that my fleet can move with same general speed.

Controlling speed is realy only important in games like bridge commander and starfleet command, the only thing id recomedn would be a temporary speed boost on one ship per race. Thats why i lke the monsoon(ithink) when fed for hit and run beacuse fleets can go in atack and get out fast for repairs.

Look lets build a scenario, a lonely Norexian warbird is flying to the other romulan base in full speed, but then suddenly 5 ktingas appear and shoot at the warbird, because the warbird was at full speed and the ktingas attacked her from behind she couldnt fire back due to the arc restriction and she also couldnt chase them just because she would have stop and then turn around but by then the ktingas would be far gone.

So now the norexian shields are at 50% and because the ktingas also fired their special weapon at her 50 of her hull points are missing 2. And non of the 5 ktingas were lost :D .


See this is just an example for how this would work, and u would be forced to escort bigger ships or they would get attacked by little ships B)

Norexans have rear torpedo launchers as well as a Disruptor or 2 if I can remember but point taken.

It's just that would have everything on full sheed anyway, and in space ships with larger engines would go faster then ships with smaller engines just it takes them a little bit longer.

Founder that explanation made no sence in how controling the speed of a ship would be of use.

i understood it, basicly he was saying the wb was going at full speed one way,itgets attacked from behind (they retreate) by the time its stopped to turn aroun and chase them they are gone and the WB has 50% damage.

Nice to have ships turn slow, like 10 seconds on the movies, even the most manuverable ones.

The maximum speed in space depends on how fast your propellant goes and how long your fuel lasts.

Remember:

The longer your engines burn, the fast you go. But if you switch them off, you won't become slower, as there is no air in space (no friction). The size of your engines in comparison with the mass (because of the inertia) of your ship just changes the acceleration, that is how fast you will reach a certain speed.

For example, a rocket motor will accelerate you in a relatively short time to a few thousand km per hour. Then your fuel runs out and you stay at that speed.

An ion engine has not that much power, you won't accelerate as fast. But as the ions are flying with a much higher speed, you theoretically can get near light speed, if you just have it running long enough.

(I would appreciate someone correcting possible mistakes in my explanation, should there be any. ;))
