ok me and my friend were thinking that it would be kool for base defenses if the shuttles flying around them would be able to defend the base they're flying around. I mean think about it, if your shipyartd is under a small attack that it couldn't withstand before it built ships, it would get destroyed easily. This way you would be able to build a couple ships to defend it. (this could work with the avatars... if you pick one you get defenses, if you pick the other you don't...?)
