Something that might make a good system for the mod, and also make the game a bit more cannon, would be an experience system of some sort. What I mean by this is, the more battles that a ship gets into, should give a ship a certain amount of experience. With this in mind, when going into another battle, the ship with more experience can stick up for the less experienced ships with greater ease. This all makes alot of sense, because it is the crew of the ship gaining the experience, (not the ship itself), and the more they earn, the better they are able to manage the ship and distribute its functions more efficiently, thus, making the ship harder to kill in battle.
I thought of this idea from a different game that some of you might be familiar with. Homeworld Cataclysm. In that, each and every ship was able to gain experience in battle, and go back into battle stronger, and more capable to withstand attacks. This idea will bring the idea that the crew is the most important component of a ship, better into focus for the game, as it is so many times emphasized in all of the series.
