Single Player in Fleet Ops
Post ideas and suggestions on new features or improvements here.

I was just thinking about single player missions in Fleet Ops and wondered if it was possible to create the necessary environment only for creating missions in Fleet operations. You could do a smaller "How to-mission" for people to see what is possible with the tools provided. Very basic stuff actually you can build uppon in future. Finally, not you would have to do new mission content alone but everyone could create missions and upload them to public. Depending on how feasible it would be to program it - that would give you time to focus on other stuff without neglecting the urge for missions to be released.

I believe that's more Megadroid's realm due to MMM - and he should be putting together all those tutorials... at some point...

I'm waiting for a C++ API for missions, but MMM is your best choice.

Probably not as much as I should.

If you have basic C or C++ knowledge, it's a small step to Java and scripting languages like Lua. That said, it is always good to familiarize yourself with a language before using it for projects. There are great online guides for every language, so if you're familiar with the basic constructs, it's merely a matter of looking up how things are written.

Well, I'm most familiar with PHP. But with me, I know a lot of the basic functions and what they are used for. I just don't know how to use them in a way to make a working application.

Megadroid and I were planning on remaking the A1 campaign for FO as a sample of how to script missions or something of that nature. The Devs are also making a few resources for that endeavor (hero ships from A1, certain units like the Son'a and Species 9341) but they have much more important priorities like the redo patches.
It would be awesome if a toolset was made like in Starcraft though rather then having to script it all in notepad...

Most people seem to think that programming is complicated and involves a lot of creativity. As someone who is studying computer science let me say: If you need a lot of creativity, you are Doing It Wrong. The first step is always "What do I want to do?" The next step is "What must be done in order to achieve it?" And the final step is "What must I use in order to do that?" And only when you can answer all of these questions, the time has come to actually do it. Programming is a skill and you can learn it by reading about it (theory) and doing it (practice). You need both of them, and teh brainz to understand and learn.

I know what I want to do. I want to make a state-of-the-art racing simulator that doubles as an interplanetary flight simulator that is the most modable simulator that has ever been built. I know it's ambitious. I've built plugins for Orbiter and I've tried to build plugins for rFactor. But I haven't gotten very far in either instance.

You know what you want to do, but you don't know how exactly to do it. That means you probably should read a good book about it, or an extensive online tutorial.
An advice: It is not always good to start with trying to make the best and most awesome version of something. If you can't do a basic version, you might not be able to do it.

I agree! With the previous poster. Start small and build upon the sucess and failures of you previous mods . "For the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step."

You should really take a class in java or c# as its easy to learn and its waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy better to work with an instuctor who knows what hes talking about.

mayb if you make a list of what resources are needed for the mission redo then possibly the community could help there

Speaking of programming I am looking to learn anyone have a list of on-line resources geared for technical people but without any previous programming knowledge?
