Couple thoughts I had. A structure for romulans that blankets the area around it in shroud but only for enemies. Kinda like the gap generator in the command and conquer series.
Listening post - got the idea from star trek vi when the enterprise is heading into Klingon space to retrieve Kirk and McCoy. A Klingon station detects them but doesn't identify them. Was thinking it could be a station with an ability to detect and reveal vessels only on the mini map in a specific radius. The station would remove fog or shroud though. Kind of seen similar ideas in othe sensor threads.

The Gap Generator, I like. Kinda defeats itself though, once the enemy notices the shroud keeps regenerating.

Perhaps the stations just generates the fog even when enemy ships are in the radius, basically making their sensor ranges useless. I kind of like this idea personally as I can see a few neat applications for it in mods as well.

Sounds like an excellent idea Majestic

Nice alternative idea. I like it.

i like it too.
maybe there could be an analogous nebula that disables only sensors and not shields.

Thanks I thought it was a great alternative to the idea first presented to us and doesn't alter the balance much at all.

It would be quite interesting to see all the creative and dastardly uses the players would come up with for this thing.
You can't kill what you can't see...heheheheh

This idea really reminds me of the Arbiter unit from Starcraft, which could cloak nearby units

Now that would be a awesome ship for FO, a ship that could cloak ally ships. It would be awesome for team games where you have a ally that doesn't have cloak. It would be a really neat surprise to see Borg or Federation ships decloak out of nowhere.
FO Dev's, I hope you have something like that planned for the future, It would really make team games much more interesting.

Off course the ship itself can't be cloaked. So you know there is probably a cloaked fleet under its wing, but how big it is, you do not know! That would be awesome!

Yes, lets cloak a Tactical Cube or two. They'll never see it coming.

A station that reduces enemy ships sensor effectiveness by a certain % is ok with me, but shroud generation in Star Trek is not so Star Trek, it's CnC.
Tricking sensors, partially disabling them, sending them false telemetry is more believable in the star trek universe, for "shrouding" something from the sensors of enemy ships/stations we do have an effective device: cloaking.

Shroud generators were excellent in Command and Conquer Red Alert and its sequel Red Alert 2. Although you might know where the base is...you have no idea what they have or are doing which makes for a dangerous situation. I employed them many times. Armada isn't very unlike C&C...infact i think we should draw upon their ideas more often.
Chronosphere...Transwarp
Stealth...Cloak
Iron Curtain...Rotating Shield Frequencies
Besides Gap Generators which are a superb idea
, i think we should look at getting something like the Command And Conquer Mirage Tank...a ship that can pose as an enemy ship by using a hologram to takes its shape. Mirage tanks were very valuable.

If you see similarities then it's OK, I don't mind, but I think most of the players will agree we do not wish to play a CnC game, but a different one.
If you wish more CnC, reinstall or just play the CnC. I do have them and played them.
Personally I do not wish to see another CnC, the only difference being the units are from Star Trek.
Before you start the game in multiplayer there is an option to enable fog of war and shroud. You do actually need to explore things, hence all races need to scout, and there is no permanent field of view.
You only see what is in sensor range.
Hope it was not to offensive.
