I think that a good idea for FO is to allow existing ships to change weaponry as well as upgrading weaponry. Changing weaponry exists on SFC3, and I think that it may have a place on FO since the purpose of FO is to become as much canon as possible since A2 was not canon itself. In order to change weaponry for a ship or ships, there would have to be a menu on the taskbar that would indicate what weapon(s) a player would want for his/her ship(s).
After a choice is made, just like the refits that exist now on FO, the ship would then be converted into a new ship with the new weaponry. The choice of weapons would be limited by the size of the ship(s). There would have to be a cost of resources, but if an existing weapon is traded for a different one, the player would either only have to spend a small amount of resources depending on what the trade doesn't cover or gain resources if the new weapon is less expensive than the old weapon. This would be just like in SFC3, and I think it would make things more canon on FO.

Actually FO wants to be a great multiplayer mod and as balanced as possible, and I have a feeling that this is going to be much more the case in v3

It's a cool idea but it wouldn't work in FO for a couple reasons.
1. everyone would do like in SFC3 and just get the biggest, most powerful ship possible and load it with the most powerful weapons.
2. the trick in SFC3 was balancing speed, manueverability, and power. In FO manuverability doesn't matter, and speed is far less important than power, so there's very little balance involved for a given class size.

Perhaps you bring up a good point. When you consider factors such as ship speed and starship energy, there would have to be limits. They already exist in SFC3, but perhaps a good idea is to limit choices for certain ships in respect to certain ships. Special weapons, for example, are limited to only certain ships (i.e. Bortas uses only ion cloud while BoP uses gravitic mines). That should help keep smaller ships in use on FO. I should have pointed that out earlier.

It does have its places in SFC3 but just isnt as implemntable in A2, more specificaly fleet ops, A mod that was made to utilize balances of more than just weapons but that of speed/shields in with it would work.

That should be taken into account. As for what the Praetor mentioned about the Rhienn refit, I meant that ships should be able to switch and switch and switch until they get ultimately destroyed in battle.

I understand, what I asked wasen't exactly the same, but it was close enough.

So this idea is not really that new, eh? That's cool.
