Ship AI - Weapon Range

I have noticed that when long and artillery range ships attack, they often move in far closer than is necessary.
I have watched my ranged ships get taken out because they flew right into the fire zone of their shorter ranged targets, sometimes right up to point blank! :ermm:
This is especially noticeable when trying to do precise base attacks while avoiding turrets and starbases.
Can they be made to automatically stop moving once their weapons are in range?
I'm not sure if there is an accuracy penalty for being on the edge of the firing range, but I would gladly take it if it kept my steamrunners out of the crossfire. :pinch:

Set the movement autonomy to low.
Then ships will attack the target at maximum range.

Sometimes this happens when your ships are in fleets as well (a few attack from maximum range, the rest move in while trying to jocky for position): so far I know of no fool proof way of stopping this from occuring  :(

The first thing I do is set the movement autonomy at the shipayrd to 'Low'. Then every ship from it automatically has low settings, you can do this with SW autonomy too!
