direct-hull weapons should break shields, yep, we will add more effects to make those specials easier to identify in the next patches
we just did not have enough time to do new effects for everything in 3.1.2

Aye, I'm quite inclined to agree with Doca and Optec: shield flickering is absolutely necessary to tell when you've lost the shield subsystem in a big fleet, or when you've taken critical damage. I don't think it's half bad either 
As for shield hits.. only a few episodes in TNG clearly show massive torpedo explosions on shield or hull (like against the Borg in BOBW when they have adapted), so I think Fleet Ops does a pretty good job of representing what we "should" see

in an online game i would obviously use the flicker option because it is useful.
but the ability to turn flicker off would allow me to do screenshots easily
the new effects are amazing, but taking screenshots of hull damage looks ugly unless u time the shot perfectly to coincide with the flicker being off.
on the topic of whether torps should make explosions when hitting shields:

) its ostensibly a scene from nemesis which had good VFX and it shows torps being "absorbed" by the shields, rather than blowing up. i like that idea. the torps design would want to get as much energy into the shields, to damage the shields as much as possible, so it would transfer that energy into the shields by using the technobabble device rather than exploding and a bunch of the energy being wasted in an omni-directional explosion.

. I don't think the dev team would really appreciate removing those either somehow

i'm in two minds about it, i love the explosion effects too. all in all its a minute decision, i would be just as happy with the game either way.

Remember in Nemesis the Enterprise has "skin" shields, which might function differently.
Aren't those going to introduced on some ships at some point?

I think they're working on it, I remember it being brought up before.
