There's a post somewhere where Doca was looking for ideas as to what would happen if you built a starbase over a planet.  Basically, some of the ideas were extra resources, etc.  So planets may have some use in the future.  I could see "controlling" a planet giving you extra supplies or some extra tritanium or something.  They're redoing quite a bit of stuff with the economy, although we really don't know what that is.  I think it would be great if we came up with some ideas of how to make the space field itself more interesting, and then they can augment those ideas to fit whatever they have planned.

I think it would be cool if, at first, the colony or base would cost you a certain ammount of resources per minute.  Maybe depending on the type of planet.  Then, after a certain ammount of time being established, it would start being free, and eventually, it could produce extra resources, supplys, ect.  So right off the bat it is not helpful, but if you can support a planet for a while, it would be a great help in the long run.  You could build planetary defences like land based weapons, satalites, ect, and of course, you could send fleets to bombard enemy planets.   It would be cool if you had to take time to setup an orbit around the colony in order to attack it.  That way you could be fired upon by enemy ships while you were attacking it and have to pull out.  You would, of course have to destroy satellite first.

Yeah... I think you could make planets work in FO. :whistling:

Getting supply from planets sounds reasonable, since many (if not all) production facilities are planet-side. Buying supplies from there instead of the Starbase (or reducing the cost when close) may be an idea.

maybe planets could act as trading stations as well. :woot:  once established, they could send ships to and from other planets, even if not colonized, and you could buy and sell resources there.

combining ideas, w00t! :woot: :sweatdrop:

some ideas i can come up with off the top of my head would be:
1.  a random event where (possibly deplete-able di or tri moons get below a certain point) would explode, leaving a residue cloud, in which the chunks and dust can be gathered at a slower rate
2. a trade station near a planet that provides suppies
3. a special freighter that can gather materials from nebulae, delivering them to a special station, that upon accumulating certain combinations of materials, can produce additional supply, tritanium, etc. or can unlock a special ability or unit
3. a nucleon nebula could have a special station built
--A. near it or
--B. with a special freighter...
----that absorbs the radiation, and provides a boost to special energy power/recharge (maybe ----to either across the whole map, or just within a limited range).
----this could also introduce weapons that can take advantage of this ability,
for example, maybe a klingon weapon that can poison the nebula and causes the station to explode in a lethal way. a romulan weapon that can attach to the station and siphon power from it, while restricting its productivity to the host player.
4. asteroids that can be mined
5. a special anomaly that disrupts the use of special weapons
6. a special weapon that can be fired into a sun, causing a burst of radiation in that direction
7. a borg upgrade to mining that partially encompasses the di or tri moon (like an orbital station), which increases mining efficiency. It does the mining and processing together at a rate equal to 2 and a half freighters, and blocks any other freighter from using the moon, until destroyed.  the cost should be equal to 2 freighters and 1 processing bay for appeal, but build time takes a while, as a down side.
8. a special anomaly or asteroid that contains special properties, allowing special units to be built around it..
example:  a trilihium asteroid.  klingons are able to build a massive long range, high burst beam weapon that does massive damage to anything in its path.  It could have a VERY long recharge time, has no shields due to instability (so it needs protected), emits gravitational instability that prevents stations from being built near it, and can only be fired 3 times.  after that, it burns out.

perhaps borg need it to build a transwarp gate system that also can only be used a few times until it burns out.
special high class, high limitation, high priority units could be cool.
9. special weapons that can take advantage of spatial anomalies and bodies
10. destructable objects that can reveal new paths
11. tetrion nebula could randomly jolt an em/electrical charge that disrupts shields, engines, random subsystem, or just does general damage to ships that wander too close
12. building a construction station near an inhabited planet improves construction time of that station, thus representing acquired help from the locals.  maybe its not limited to stations.. perhaps all construction near a planet (within a certain distance) is improved upon in some way

Next, you're going to be telling me that Fleet-Ops is a simulator.

Well, if I infer from what the Devs have hinted at over the years, they are looking to make maps better, and give us more tools.  Right now, the only thing we have for an environment are moons, asteroids (and blocking triggers), and nebulas with poor pathing.  If they follow through on map making like they have on everything else, then they'll probably to improve on some of this stuff.  They've mentioned crates before and had idea thread on that, and giving extra resources if a starbase is over a planet, so I bet we'll see some cool things down the road with regards to map making.

Edit:  Darn spelling errors!

For those that wanted the Cardassian full race...i've added these thru modding.

The ships look incredible, even better than the fleetops ships...and i mean that as a compliment. FleetOps looks incredible but these ships are even more amazing. The stations such as DS9 look great. You can play as the Hutet from DS9: Dominion Wars, the Galor, Keldon, and some other ships that just look sweet.

A bit off topic but USNDiesel mentioned "king of the hill" type play which could be good.  Could fight over capturing Mal's Fortress of Doom!

And games such as capture the flag, where the flag is the omega particle and you have to use constructors to tow it to your starbase and hold it for a certain amount of time.
