I was watching Deep Space 9 and I was wondering, fleet battles in FO are a bit too..linear. You send a few dozen ships, fight... do some micromanagement, and win.

I noticed that fleet battles shown Deep Space 9 have a lot more variety. For example, in the First battle of Chin'Toka, the Allied fleet was getting torn apart by the Defense platforms, Garek finds out that the Defense platforms do not have a power source. They find an asteroid and later on destroys it, thus immoblizing the entire Defense grid.

Can this be done in any way in FO? Im thinking of something like.. When a ship is in a battle, a special weapon becomes avaliable. If you select it, it decreases your shield recharge rate, fire rate by.. say 50%, becasue the crew are looking for vulnerabilities of the enemy fleet. In about a minute or two, the crew comes up with something, and remodulates shields or changes frequencies of their phasers so that the enemy fleet will sustain more damage or sm like...

Just a thought.. Im pretty sure that the A2 engine will not support such a complex thought..

i think the A2 engine would allow that but it takes some of the stratagy out of the game if it is implinmented i think it should only be on hero units

Yeah, good point on the hero units..

even if this were possible, i can't see it working out strategy wise. when you think about it, how many skirmishes are you involed in that go on for up to 2 minutes. :sweatdrop: yu would have been destroyed before any breakthroughs were made.

A good point Ryan.

This would also be good if hero units would gain experiance and would gain bonuses on how quickly they would figure out this "breakthrough" :D

I dont think it can be done though

My battles last pretty long... how long do battles last for u guys..?

Well not THAT long :P
If its a big one it prolly last a couple of mins thats true, but those are rare :(

yeah, battles are over pretty fast. even with me playing on an 8player map with me versus 4computer hard on the same team they still dont sustain the battles for very long.

there was another mod i played awhile ago, i cant remember what one. i think borg incursion that had the AI units retreat when they took X amount of damage but this was more irritating than anything else.

i think this could be a great idea if done correctly. but how it can be; i have no idea.

----- edit

oh, and my small skirmishes last about 30 seconds, and large ones about 1 minute, full scale battles, maybe 5 minutes, but only seen like 3 of these the entire time i played fleet ops.

I agree that the battles are very linear, but there's no way around that. Games like Empire Earth are much more non-linear because you have sea, land, and air, and undersea. In FO there is only sea, basically, although cloak is sort of undersea. There's no way to add an "air" component.

Subspace starships.. Hmm.......

i like this idea; or how about phase shifted starship that can shoot normal ship but can only be shot by special (AA) ships?

Problem is, if it is out of phase, we players wont be able to see it :P

Nah thats stupid, and its not canon. Plus the Ciadan are somekind of subspace masters maybe they will have this things :D

The Ciaden are one non-canon race that I am absolutely, positively looking forward to.. ^_^
