Hi there.
I see the new Supermacy BOTF2-game out there and thought about something:
We have minor races. We add a planet on a map and this planet "might" be under the control of a minor race.
In order to benefit from this race (you can also colonizze uninhabitanted planets) you have to fullfill their wishes. This wish could be a special amount of ressources you give them and a defense perimeter (defense to all 4 sides of the planet) and maybe building up a trade station there (not in game right now)
When the minor race will join you, you get a certain "avatar" bonus, like additional ships, or an additional ability for your ships, more offensive/defensive power for certain ship classes, maybe a new kind of station, special minor-race-ships and so on.
When we now implement a galaxy map, we can start a thing similar to Birth of the Federation and, if we are very optimistic, similar to Starflee command with editable ships.
The "in-game" is the game we have now. The "control" menue is the galaxy map with all sectors you have, the sectors the enemy got and unexplored/new sectors where you can find minor races, special structures and so on.
In order to let the game play like this, we need additional ressources. So my idea is:
A sector might hol planets in itself. These planets can be colinized. You can also build special defense perimeters around planets, called orbital batteries. The amount of batteries you can build depends on the population the planet got.
Every planet also got a certain amount on "free slots" depending on the actual population.
In this slots, you can add certain structures, like science stations, a planetary ship-yard, trading-centers (we know birth of the federation...)
And with THIS we can implement science to research new weapons, chassis, stations and so on.
In the campaign map, the ressources needed for building a ship are x10, so everything goes up much slower.
You can halt or pause the actual game but should be able to continue to give orders. So now you are able to fight and build on multiple borders without loosing the sight.
Welcome to Fleet Ops - Galaxy.
Just my 2 cents
(how many years should it take to implement such a huge idea?)

sounds good. Would be a cool npc feature. maybe you could bey mixed tech designs from aliens you ally with. Or steal them from ones you don't.

Fleet-Ops is a fleet-based battle game, not an empire builder like BOTF2. It might be a cool idea, but it's not really what Fleet Ops is about.

armada/fleetops is a strategy game, and his idea adds new strategics points+enhance gameplay more than just fighting, so yes, this is also what it's about, great ideas.
