I was just looking at a starship articles page with all sorts of stats from the Star Trek series. There was a series of probe series that they were talking about, including a Mars defensive probe. Then I thought, "What if that could be launched from a planet?" It is shown in that episode where the Borg assimilate Picard. The Cube is flying, and then three small ship-like things fly toward it, and are shot and destroyed by the cube. If the probes did stroke, then there would have been a nice triple flash, and a boom. So, why not? What do you think?
(P.S, I think that Species 8472 should be in the new version.)

First of all we would have to "enable" planets as they don't have any real use in FleetOps any longer and have become background objects.
Your idea reminds me of the Cardassian Dreadnoughts from stock A2... but I'm not too sure if such a weapon fits into FleetOps, as it would be just too weak or too strong without warp (weak: if shields/hull is weak like in stock A2, too hard to reach the target and too easy to kill without warp, strong: if the drones get strong shields and hull which would be 1. unrealistic and 2. make the game imbalanced).
I think FleetOps should keep focusing tactical ship combats, the Dominion Artillery is already enough (and hard enough to use!).

Massive build cost and painfully long build time?

Only if the drones don't destroy stronger ships. Ships in FO are supposed to take lots of damage in order to have long battles (am I correct there? ^^). So weapons of mass destruction wouldn't fit in.
Drones that only single ships... hummm... that sounds kinda cool. But all the things & problems mentioned above apply here aswell.

This "things" were ships. 3 mars defend ships not probes. civil ships like the SS Raven. The last thing that UFP could do at that moment with non starfleet ships left. (wolf359)

Yeah, it even called those three, ships, in the episode if I remember correctly

I doubt they were civilian's, Starfleet seems more like the type to prefer Orbital Platform-style defence like the Spacedock orbiting Earth.
Which makes me wonder why Earth Spacedock always happens to be on the opposite side of the Planet and why one of the Federation's core Worlds has no defences of any kind.

Well: first off the Spacedock would be either in Lagrange or geosync orbit really high up (say 400miles up).... so unless you approach from the moon or coincidently get near the spacedock... no chance of getting close... maybe

Well this isnt neccesarily about the defense of the planets, but what point is there to defend a planet if theres nothing on it? so if you made planeyts more important, like with training ground or research facilities i think itd be very cool, also intrepid class can land on planets, so why dont we incorperate that to into the game.

Spacebook? Either thats a typo, or you've seen a very interesting Star Trek parody.
