In an episode of a series that shall not be named, there was a race that used ultra-thin particle beams that could punch through shields. Now obviously, you wouldn't want this on a production ship but i think it would be cool on some NPC's or something...

In 2373, the Maquis rigged a Cardassian freighter with a focused particle beam that punched through the gyro-shielding of the USS Malinche, causing the ship to lose helm control. (DS9: "For the Uniform")
that one? so, it wasn't the ship shields but the "gyro-shielding", right?

Hm...
And here I thought he was referring to Babylon 5 (I said it! I said it!) and the Shadows' weapons.

I was actually thinking of Voyager and some small race that happened to have particle beam weaponry in one episode.

Hehe, well this sort of technology also appeared in SG-1 with that effect... instantly punching through shields (though it was some sort of plasma thingy)

I fail to see the problem with saying Voyager's name around.
Voyager. VOYAGER. VoYaGeR. vOyAgEr.
Voyager
See? Nothing happens.
Anyways, I see I was wrong, but the image of "thin" particle beams made me think of the Shadows' weapons.

It's just that that didn't seem to be a popular series...

Popular or not, it's part of the Star Trek Universe. So there shouldn't be any problem with mentioning it around.
Besides, Voyag

But, many Star Trek weapons are particle beams. Vulcans. Kazon. Xindi. Hirogen I think. shipboard phasers fire particles alongside the nadions and laser beam, so lots of races use particle beams, but some are more effective than others. However, this is a modified beam, so maybe there was something funky about it. A specialty particle beam weapon on some ships would be cool.

I think what he is refering to is compressed polaron particle beams. there was also another episode where a race used a pulse like particle thingymajigger....in both cases the weapon passed right through the sheilds...I belive the premise of the technobabble behind the effect was that the polaron particles were compressed so tiny that the sheilds imaginary meshlike feild was just to "porous" to block these beams......cant really think of the right word but I know exactly what he is refering to.
I think shadow weapons were based on plasma super compressed radther than a specific particle such as nadions or photons or polarons.....I forget now cuz I could very well be wrong about that.

Ah, yeas I think your right, According to shield harmonics, the width of the particle compression is important to the deflection of beam, because of the energy sphere surrounding the vessel can only deflect energy in a certain radius. The deflection is given off as a glow, and shaking of the interior vessel. However, the thin particle beam goes through the plamsa screen and plows through the hull, (hopefully) and does enough damage to shatter the hull. Now THAT is more technobabble!
Ah yes, technobabbloe, my dearest friend...
okay enough of that, but I do love technobabble, and its easy to do talking and not typing. I love doing it to the dumb jocks in school.
