Don't know if it has been proposed before.. but what about making online campaigns? Like they did in the C&C games and other. You know, there is a map with sectors and you fight for the sectors.. would provide some nice immersion into the action. Although I am not sure if this is possible with the current technological base.

Sort of akin to Soulstorm but with multiple players? It's been discussed a time or two as a "wouldn't it be fantastic if...", but while there's been a couple of ideas as to how it might be workable with the current engine, it would take a lot more time and effort than I suspect the current dev team are able to spare at the current time.

Why shouldn't it be possible with MMM?

Online campaigns are currently not possible with MMM - only possible for singleplayer campaigns.

Just out of curiosity, how well understood is the file format for maps? Well enough that a script could generate one procedurally?

Megadroid developed a random map feature for use with Fleet Operations - it was never more than half hatched however (intelligent placement of map objects).

My comment about Soulstorm got me to thinking about if it was possible to program a system that could take a current map and add map objects like structures, ships etc according to data stored in a campaign management database. It's something that would only really be possible if the format of map files was well characterised.
