Is it possible to replace the resource counter of the 'observer' player with a list of the active players resources? Commentors wouldn't have to guess and showing observers have 0 is kinda pointless.

A very useful idea for observers and glad to hear it is on the to-do list (along with lots of other stuff).

Question is, would it be better to see a list all the time (with possibly chosen avatars also showing) and thereby loose screen real estate, or only display when you have a unit or station of a particular player selected?

i'd say whenever u click a unit of a player u see that player's resource situation. clicking away leaves u either with nothing or whatever u last selected.

maybe if u hover over the resource numbers then u get a full list of each player's resource situation. at worst it will be 7 rows deep. you could get away with making them smaller too, as it doesnt have to be easily visible. it would take up less than a quarter of the average height of the screen.

I hope a complete redo of the observer system is planned.  I would love to observe if I could do more, like at least chat with the players.  if anything, that would be great.  I really like the idea of letting the the observer see the resource count too.  I think it would be helpful if you could allow your team mate to see how many resources too.  It would help us inexperanced gamers because our teammates could advise us on what to, and what not to build.

What if when a unit is not selected the interface is replaced with this list of resources for all the players, it'd have the player's avatar shown, the player's name next to it with the resources listed with plain numbers in corresponding colours (blue for dil, orange for tri, red for supply).

What would also be nice is if when you hover over a players avatar it shows their currently most combat effective ship. And when you hover over their name, it will then give an icon showing their most commonly built ship and their least commonly built ship. Just to get a better Idea as to who likes using which units more than others.

The Amirals Log already does that.

I mean like an active view where you don't have to pause it. It would show it ingame.

Could be open to abuse though with an observing friend giving info to a player.  Of course we wouldn't dream of doing something so underhand  :innocent:

There's a way to fix that: make it so observers can only talk to all players at once. No private chat.

edit: Either that, or observers can chat with each other, maybe this could be decided in the pre-game settings where Give Units and Ally Trading and all that are - Observers can talk to players (on/off)

I had suggested the idea before.  You would make it so they could only chat to everyone at once, that way, if someone were to cheat, everyone would know.

Of course, they could always do it over TS :pinch:

I went back in my browser history to find it.  I wonder why it didn't post?

You sure that wasn't on another thread - I recall you posting on a similar thread to that effect :)

It would be cool if observers could chat with each other.
