If a few improvements were made to this system this would be very helpful to recording, would save me so much time, and would allow for better quality replays.  How large was the file size yandon?

It appears to be about 3 mb every 5 minutes per player, and this rate changes as more or less units are in play. I ran a 1v1 AI test game for 5 minutes and got a load of 1mb for instance.

Wow, thats actually a pretty good sized, people could then potentially record their own, upload them somewhere, and the let commentators do replays on them....

Btw, just wanted to clarify a few things:

1. The replay system uses a fair number of system resources while operational.

2. You are always viewing from the perspective of the player you've chosen. Aka, if you are in a 1v1 and you are player 1, you only get to see everything from player 1 (you) perspective. If you are an observer, you see everything as usual. EDIT: ok, weird shit happens

3. I believe that the out of sync is only out of sync in the replay, but I have not confirmed this yet.

The replay files (just drop them into the %appdata%Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operationssave folder - with the replay feature turned on of course)

Hosting and observing allows me to see both! (ya!)  Still some replay out-of-sync issues. You start to see them at 2-3 min mark. Progressively gets worse. But... damn, pretty close to workable.

I think with a few tweaks, this could make replays, and replay making so much better...

Those 'few tweaks' are probably something more like months of work  :sweatdrop:

i wouldnt hold your breath. last time doca talked about replays he said that the replay maker was low priority. fleetops doesnt use huge system resources, so running fleetops with fraps is practical without huge computer spending.

The replay files are certainly much smaller than the youtube video size. :D
I'm just wondering if it would be possible to somehow get the file size even smaller (starcraft2 replays for example tend to be at most 150kB, even for long games)

edit: I just tried zipping the .sav file, which came out as about 500kB

Well im curious as to if the file worked after unzipping?
