Ok, so at the moment all of the Sensor platforms ping, every I think its 10 seconds? (sorry don't know the exact details). Anyway, here is my idea, introduction of 'Power Usage'.
Let's say that there is a potential energy amount of 1000 per player, that they have control over within there s
I think that there should be a way of re-routing power to a handful of sensor platforms, increasing there ping frequency. For example, on the Nebula gate map, placing a sensor platform by one of the gates, and re-routing a limited (but extended) amount of power to it, increasing the ping frequency. Obviously, the balance of this is that, if you allocate more power to one, you lose power, and there for ping time to another.
Now here's my proposal, for weapons platforms. Exactly the same situation, a total amount, of which you can 'spend' energy in designated places. For example, you can remove power all together from one sensor platform and direct it to a weapons platform, giving it a higher offensive value.
And, this could be used on stations to. If theres a ship, or something being researched, you could re-route power, and a certain amount of supply's in order to either have the ship completed quicker, or research researched faster.
If further explanation is required, please ask.
Anyway, i thought this was a pretty good and do-able idea, increasing Empire management in an interesting way.

IMO I'd rather have a toggle switch to turn them on or off. I think a power system would be a little too much to control.

Fair point

as far as routing between platforms, that isn't very cannon
each platform has its own power core, they are not all hooked into a central batery or somthing!

Maybe for the Ciadan then - they use giant central batteries in some of their fleets etc

good point, but the ciadan is not in fleetops yet!

In the shows, you routinely have situations where power is shifted between subsystems. I actually think is a great idea, but that it could be applied to ships first.
Imagine if a veteran ship could shift power (all weapons and life support) to shields and impulse to get the hell out of a bad battle. It happens in the shows all the time (especially TNG).

It happens in the show all the time, but the shows are all about one ship usually - this wouldn't work too well for an RTS dealing with fleet operations, where the majority of people have trouble with special weapons that target only a single vessel and can't be set on full weapons autonomy

between subsystems on ONE ship or station yes. between multiple independent platforms parsects away no!

Not to mention large fleet actions in DS9, where everyone but the Defiant forgot to turn on their shields. Maybe it's better if we don't let people decide what to turn on and off.

Perhaps 3 options could do the jobs: On, Off and Auto (which means a triggering event or pressing a button on another station could return this object to its default state).
I support the idea of energy routing for cidans
