Some random (not so flashy) ideas on what formations might be useful during MP play.

Fan on attack / Crescent - Spread ships out in a crescent (half circle perimeter) when attacking. Useful when engaging AOE units.

In tight - Overcome the natural tendency of ships to spread out. Move/Attack always forces the fleet (control group) to move at the slowest ship speed (i.e. what ctrl-Move does)

Rotating front line - When a ship takes 50% shield damage, rotate it to the back of the fleet (relative to the direction they are facing).

I like these!!   Now if only we could do "Sphere formation," where the weakest/lowest HP ship rotates into the innermost part of the sphere.  God, Homeworld was a great game! :)  But FO is better!!

Sounds good, though moving together should be used for any formation used during movement.

Sphere would work best if support ships were in the centre. Weapons that effect a number of your ships in a certain radius would benefit from it.

On a somewhat related note, is the Assault Wall still in?

Assault Wall is out, sadly.  It required the z-axis.  (And it was damned near the only formation I ever used.  Ah well.)

Technically, the Y axis is vertical; the X and Z axis are the horizontal ones. Just look in the map editor to confirm it. :D

Lol.  Sadly, Gamer, physics AND the map editor will disagree with you .  The Y axis controls the "up and down" placement in the map editor.  Have to be careful though as things won't actually appear if they are too far up or down.

EDIT:  Sorry, I just re-read your post and realized that you technically said that the x/z axis' were the horizontal but intended to leave the Y out of that group.  Use your punctuation correctly you tit!! :D
