Is there going to be any changes to the 'Guard' feature in the future?

As currently, ships using guard linger behind the ship being guarded and rarely engage in combat without being prompted too.

Is there going to be a mix of formation and guard at any point? So say you assign 3 Bugs to guard a miner. The 3 Bugs form an arc around the miner and engage any incoming enemies, with the miner falling back while the enemy is eliminated

Chances are you'll say, sorry the AI is far too simple for that  ^-^

What's the point of an escort that attacks anything in range? Escorts being slightly behind (or by the side, which ismore common for me) and attacking what attacks them is better.

Blindly attacking anything in range is Search and Destoy, while escorts defend their charge not start fights.

I think you misunderstood my post

I don't want the escort to go on a Kamikaze kill anything ahead death march.

I want the escorts to be in close proximity in formations. So like a square, in which there are 4 vessels. 3 bugs, one miner. They all travel at the same speed to the same destination, if anything comes near the bugs attack range then they open fire, however they will not break formation.

I actually really like this idea. I find that half the time if I set them to the guard formation, the ship they were guarding would get destroyed before my "escort" (I use the term loosely due to their effect) even decided to fire a shot. It just seemed like a useless formation and eventually I just stopped using it altogether...

Putting it that way sounds better. I could agree with that one.

Guard is an action, not a formation...
