just a quick thought,
if the romulans are getting mine layers in the next big redo, would it make more sense to have
fed-rom as minelayer defiant
fed-kling as cloak defiant
or leave as is?

It's fine as it is, in my opinion. It's a canon Mixed-Tech and the Romulans are much better known for cloaking than minelaying.

to add to tylers comment:
if you look at canon (deep space 9) federation equiped a defiant with a cloak in a deal with the romulans.
and in the same series made cloaked mines out of their own technologies and i believe they were an aly of the klingons at that time.
so to me fed kling tech for a minelayer fed rom tech for a cloak would seem more logical

the 1st defiant was romulan cloak but that got destroyed.
didnt the 2nd defiant get 1 from the klingons? or am i remembering it wrong?
was just thinking that from a fleet ops point of view if romulans are getting mine layers then it might make more sense
(i would assume that klingons might see it as dishonourable.. but then they were quite happy to help mine the wormhole so i dont know)
just a thought anywho.

2nd defiant was never shown cloaking. the original deal was cloaking only in the gamma quadrant, as the romulans could get intel on the dominion without risking their own ships.
once the war started the gamma quadrant was off limits as the dominion presumably had the other side secure.
the original defiant was destroyed long into the war, where the romulans and klinks could do scouting on their own. so there'd be no need to give the new defiant a cloak.

and the fact that federation doesn't have cloak is not because they don't have the technology but because of that deal they have with romulans. so the feds would need romulans to agree to them using cloak, or that deal needs to be void or feds would need to get cloaks dispite that deal.
an aliance with the romulans would seem the most logical cause in my opinion

you gotta wonder where the cloaking mines came from, obviously the romulans would have been all for the minefield, as it protects them as well as the feds. so they probably allowed an exception to the treaty of algeron. maybe the romulans even supplied some cloaks secretly, to help the feds set up the mines.
or maybe the treaty only stops cloaking ships, so the feds could cloak stations/mines anyway.

off topic but didnt the klingons give the maquis some cloaks, torpedos and such at one point? (think it was before the war with dominion, when klingons were at war with cardassia by them selves)

yup 30 cloaks and assorted material assistance (presumably including torps and stuff), the klinks expected the cloaks to go on ships, the maquis put some on "missiles" which didn't really exist, presumably they actually did put them on their ships

Why not go all the way and give the Fed-Rom Defiant cloak and mines. I can hear people complain already.
But going by the series, the Romulans provided the cloak for the defiant and the Klingons have been known to use mines so i think the mixed tech is all right.
But perhaps with the new patch the whole mixed tech units will be scrambled so who knows.

Just give the Klingon's a Dog fight range sensor cloak, coupled with a Dog fight Visable light cloak. That way It may be a Advantage but not a big one . I feel the Klingons would use them as a distraction. To distract their opponent's attention to allow the BOP's and other ships to make the kill.

Not entirely sure what it is you are proposing.
