I was recently observing a match and noticed that only the player a ship belongs to can see its weapon and sensor ranges, observers can't. It would be most helpful as an observer to see sensor ranges, as often ships will be just around the edge of a scout's sensor radius and it can be hard to tell if the player with the scout saw the ships. Weapons ranges would also be nice to see whether a chasing fleet is about to get the enemy in range.

Btw, why can't players see the weapon/sensor ranges of allied players? I understand why enemy players shouldn't be able to see each other's ranges, but allies would share that kind of info.

It's probably just a game limitation. If it was realistic (something that wouldn't ruin the game in this case), you'd probably be able to see that info on almost any ship your empire has info on.

The game has no problem displaying enemy energy amounts or any of that, and I'm sure the devs can figure out how to code it to allow more than just the owner to see the ranges. Really I think you should only be able to see enemy weapon ranges if you have mixed tech ability with their race.

Gaining mixed-tech would give you detailed information on their technology, so it should be a suitable game subsitute for knowing their ships. Would probably be better than having it exactly like the show, where major powers have precise data on enemy abilities.
