I was inspired with this topic, since one thing came to mind replaying some fight scenes from Nemezis.

While they engaged cloaked Scimitar, they triangulated Enterprise attacks to aim at last torpedo/phaser hits on enemy hull and compensate for enemy ship movement in advance. Also, seems like they were able to coordinate their attacks with allies ships (Romulan Valdore class) to enhance their hit chance vs perma cloaked Scimitar.

I always wondered why normal ships could not target specific point in space without that point not excessively being any object, just using manual targeting or something similar? In many games, some land units had the ability to "target ground" which is basically similar concept. It would prove very useful against cloaked ships and inability to lock on them.

space is 3 dimensional. the only weapons that can "attack ground" are ones that do aoe damage. attacking ground has other uses in 2d battlefields, eg destroying trees to make room for more tank factories and stuff. space is empty, there's no reason to shoot at it,

Just because you don't usually need to shoot at space doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to.

what possible reason would there be to shoot at space other than that ridiculous decloak manoeuvre from nemesis (there's already a thread on that idea elsewhere).

other than that there is zero gameplay reason to shoot towards empty space. you can't hit anything. such an option would be pointless.

If I had a bunch of ships and I suspected a cloaked fleet, I could fire with dozens of ships into space, and chances are, that if there is a cloaked fleet there, I'll hit something. This hit wouldn't do much damage but at least I'd know.

you're talking about the decloak nonsense from nemesis. that's for another thread (OP linked to it), this thread is about generally targeting space.

also if you'll read my post again I said: "other than that ridiculous decloak manoeuvre from nemesis". if you wanna talk about that, go in the other thread.

I was just saying how I would use it. I've never seen an episode of this "Nemisis". You wanted a reason to target empty space, I gave my reason.

Nemesis is a Star Trek movie, not a series (that I know of).
