hi been along time since i posted on here but here it goes i was sitting the other day playing age of empires 3 and bang it hit me it has that player levelling system where you earn exp from running skirmish games and it goes to a out of skirmish city where you can buy things and so on that got me wondering could that system me looked at and maybe adapted to work for fleet ops for example it could be done so just for a example you could remove mixed tech and have it so if you lvl your say planet and you could unlock access to a thing that could be called treaty or infiltration which would then give you access to the selected enemy race teams ship and weapon designs so that the next game you enter you will have access to mix tech ships without the tedious chase of the construction ship how ever for balance i would say that you would have to unlock a treaty or infiltration ability for each enemy race

I can't think of a way to politely describe how devastatingly bad this would be.

Games that limit your options until you "level up" are terrible.  It's like saying, "Hey guys I know my game isn't very good and you'll get tired of playing it after 5 hours, so I'm going to force you to play 10 hours before you even GET the full version of the game.  Now my game has 15 hours of playtime"

Now for single-player campaigns, limiting the techtree is a good idea and helps players learn.  But this should NEVER be applied to multiplayer because it removes key counters and unbalances the game.  It was terrible in AOE III and it would be terrible in Fleet Ops

i found it to be a very good part of age of empires 3 after a while all rts games get boring hell after a while all games get boring and i found that part of age of empires 3 usefull because having to level your city didnt have any major impact to game play it just ment you had to work to get some of the realy realy good stuff unlike fleet ops and command and conquer where you have absolutely everything from the start nothing to work towards

Fleet Ops and C&C don't give you everything from the start (C&C 4 has a level system like you're talking about)...

Edit: I thought you were talking about within a game, e.g. tech trees.  Gaining experience for use outside games is stupid, because it just frustrates people and gives older players even more of an advantage over newer ones (they already have experience).  Since this game is primarily multiplayer, that would be a terrible idea.

You're right in that everyone has the exact same tools available: a three-year veteran will be able to build the same ships as the guy who picked the game up yesterday.

I cannot stress this enough: This is a very good thing.
