Ground Combat?

Post ideas and suggestions on new features or improvements here.

Recently, I was recalling the DS9 episode, the Seige of AR558, and realized fleet ops might be fun if there were ground battles.  This would probably work better integrated into the Single Player Campaign when that is released, but would be an interesting mode option for Multiplayer or Instant Action.  (this is assuming that the engine allows for such a mode)  Anyway, the best example of this sort of feature would be the game (don't hate me for mentioning this series please) Star Wars: Empires at War.  Again, I am not even sure if the fleet ops engine could support this sort of feature, but if it were possible, I think it would be interesting.

Would require planets, which I don't think are going to be re-added.

lol...you are funny Tyler! That sort of game mode would need a whole new game set up from scratch. Scripting, new units, new stations, new unit behavior, new maps - basically everything that would have to be created for a ground rts plus the link between switching the "game" in the game. If they were ever trying to implement that one on current budget and capacity - give them....say...20-30 years?

Stock didn't need a new engine for it, they just didn't show the fighting.

My Idea too ambitious?

The Armada style of doing it the same as boarding a ship would probably work (if they add planets back), but trying to show the fights themselves probably would me too much.

It just so happens the Armada engine is a reuse of the engine from a ground combat game called Battlezone. Theoretically it is possible in the current engine (just simply make a large 3D model of the terrain and set it slightly below the Z axis and then use blocking triggers over things like mountain, the same trick I used for planetary atmosphere battles in Sigma). Granted it would only really work for a vehicle based RTS, as I'm not sure the engine supports the wide range of animations that soldiers would display. So yes, Star Trek New Worlds 2 is possible on this engine.  :whistling:

I love this idea, but how would this fit in the current game play? Like would it be part of the original set-up with ground combat and space combat happening at once? It seems like this is going to end up being a seperate mode, or even a seperate game, and that would just be a shame..... :(

Well, I guess it would be easier to release a fleet ops for Star Trek: New Worlds ;)

I think the game's name tells us where all of the battles should take place. ^-^
