I aslo thought about the doctors flink...
with "BUT it destroys shields" I tried to express, that the Ship, which attacked will be pretty vulnerable afterwards.

What about something that discharges the own shields and makes direct Damage to the enemy weapon and/or engine system(s). The sideeffect for the own ship would be the discharged shields and maybe the loss of the weapon and/or engine systems.
Graphically i am thinking about an blue beam which comes from the deflector dish and, in case of the loss of the own engines, an explosion which catapults the own ship away from the enemy.

Why not have a mixed tech Phalanx? And have the Magnan Cannon Graviton loaded! Plus we could also have it that the Borg mixed Phalanx would have a Borg energy core boosting the power for all systems. But the speed of the vessel can be reduced by 20% to balance it out as well as increase the Cannons cooldown time by 40%.

1. The Phalanx is NOT useless, it has high stats, long range, is reasonably fast and those magnan phasers blast whole fleets to hell, at least that was my observation.
2. Please, kills Borg Cubes instantly, i don´t like it, given how much a borg player has to spend on them, a one hit kill weapon is out of the question for me.
3. Graviton Beams hm ? The borg use them, so maybe a special weapon or standard weapon with some twist to it could be on a borg mixed tech vessel, that sounds nice to me.
Otherwise i would like to say that it´s always nice to think about possible improvements, so don´t take my dislike personal.
well at least at my tests the phalanx didnt proove itself as fleetkiller ... not even as shipkiller, sadly.
but i like the idea of have some kind of weapons that deal kinetic damage, which should be of course more effective against unshielded ships/stations, such as the borg. But i think instakilling borg cubes is to much.
maybe some other weapons could be made that are more effective against the borg, or special other races, would make the game a bit more interresting

Logically a torpedo works much better than a kinetic weapon (M/AM is obviously very powerful).
I have not seen good evidence of the Phalanx proving itself either for its cost; what ships did you say suffered heavily?

i remember something about explosion dempening and so on, so i just thought pure kinitec weapons could do well, at least it would be seomthing new

Maybe i missed something but isn´t the magnan phaser an area effect, i was attacking a klingon science station and all their ships trying to come for me flew by that station and were destroyed.
But i have to say due to serious issues with hamachi and similar programs i´m not able to play online, so i just have experience with ai enemies.

So here's an idea that I've had since 4th Grade: A Graviton Beam! What it does is extreme damage to any ship or station, and deals double damage to Borg Cubes. 50% Health loss for anything but Cubes (and huge ships like Dreadnoughts), and destroys a Cube and other vessels like it instantly. However, it kills the weapon system, cost 1000 Dilithium, 3000 Tritanium, and 300 Supply to research, and costs 500 Dilithium, 100 Tritanium, and 10 Supply to use. Give the your thoughts.
Sounds a lot like the Phaser lance or whatever it is called on the Galaxy Refit. To be honest i'd rather see this Galaxy Refit than the Phalanx.

well, guess why its limited to 8 ships. try it out yourself, its not as bad as some ppl say. i think its just this fat orange beam most ppl dislike and the coolness of souvereigns... or just the fact that all the ppl tend to play mayson and never reach the point where they could use them.

I don't even get to soverigns often. It really depends on how equal the game is matched, and how long each player lasts.

I'm probbally the most defensive player here and when I attack It's usually a fleet of sovs with about 4 support fleets behind em... I took out two hard ai ( allied with each other, 1 vs 2 ai ) and wiped em all out with about 6 fleets.

Since we're talking about the Phalanx, here's a novel idea:
What does "phalanx" mean? ("To wikipedia!" you say). Essentially it means "finger" in Greek, but it was a military formation meant to protect its troops from incoming arrows and rocks (slingshots were popular).
So, that said, why not make the Phalanx a mid-powered escort with an "inter-ship shielding" for weaker vessels (i.e., mining or construction ships). It would definitely have some use when you're expanding to other binary moons or even for repair vessels within larger fleets.
Thoughts?
