I dunno why, no matter how much I try I can't seem to ever be fully successful with the Star Empire. Reguardless of difficulty level and how I approach different strategies. I believe the Romulans lack a 'backbone' ship (Other than the Tavara Dreadnoght). A ship that can take a lot of beating (relatively speaking) and can really support the fleet. I especially find this true in early game because if you don't rush to the warbird yard, than you get stumped by all these other enemies whom have vessels that can withstand just about as much damage as they give. With this true I find that the Star Empire is completely under appreciated and deprived of any good early game ships built purely for endurance.

All the other races have ships in these positions early game:
Feds:
- Akira
- Norway

Klingons:
- Vorcha
- Char'gh
- K'beajQ
- Qaw'duJ

Dominion:
- Escort Cruiser
- Warfrigate

Borg:
(I think any would be listed here)

The Romulans in the early game have the Rheinn disruptor refit and the griffin/shrike, depending on avatars.  They can't take a tremendous beating, but they're long range and can cloak.  Their battleships do seem weaker than those of other races, but the Generix support refit does wonders for keeping them alive long after they should be dead.

According to Dom (who seems to always be right) the Romulans are getting a major redo in 3.0.9.

You're citing the Vorcha, Char'gh, Qawduj, Akira, as early game units? ???

And you think the Escort Cruiser and the B-8 War Frigate are the early game backbone for the Dominion?  I can see why you're having problems.

You're right, where would we find a late game ship that serves as a 'backbone' (Other than the Tavara Dreadnought), that can take a lot of damage (relatively speaking) and can really support a fleet.  Let's make one up! :woot:  First, I would give it a higher defensive value over the other ships in my fleet, so that it can take some punishment.  I also might give it a passive, maybe something that increases the shield regeneration rate based on 20% of it's special energy recharge rate.  We could give it a cool name, like "Majestic Flight".

Hmm... but then it needs to have a power that can support a fleet....
Hey!  How about we give it a special that does a long ranged area effect!  Maybe it could reduce the firepower of other ships by say...25%.  This would mean the romulan ships would take less damage, and could last longer in a fight!  This is a great idea!  Someone should make a ship like that!!!!

But you're right about early game.  Someone should allow romulan ships to be able to upgrade themselves quickly, or give the romulans early access to cruisers... :whistling:

All sarcasm aside, if you really want help, I can show you why the Romulan Star Empire is powerful, and should be feared.  PM me and we'll set a game up or something.  I can do hamachi or gamespy, if need be.

The roms seem fine to me when I play and I can stand up to some Klingons

Roms > Klingons unless the Klingons spam Taq'ro'ja B'rels.  The ability to almost always land the first few blows and destroy a good portion of the opponent's firepower is an excellent thing to have.

I can't tell you how frustrated I'd been as a Klingon playing against Rommies.  Sensor jammer just bones your destroyers and the Mijural Warbirds are very quickly accessable.  While they may not have a "backbone" ship in the sense of one that you can always have que'd up to the max at a yard, then definitely have their tanks.  The Big D is an underused and excellent ship for dealing with early game units.

Not to mention the generix spectre and frigate refits, which have passives that heavily reduce the damage to their particular attack.  Seriously, the Romulans are one of the best races at creating counters to the various factions, but everyone just spams rhienn refits or griffins... :whistling:

I forgot to mention that I would consider the generix to be their "backbone".  That or the Norexan.  But I know what you mean, boggz.

Edit 2//  One thing I want to say is I apologize Gamer if I came off rude.  I just saw another post saying "I can't win, it must be the game" and did a facepalm.  I know you're better than that! ^-^

Ruanek already mentioned the support refit's shield recharge will help you with endurance.  Some other ideas are to make sure you are fielding enough talons to get intel on where the enemy is and where it's going.  That is one of the great strengths of the Romulans!  I could go on, but all of this is in the hitchhiker's guide.  If not, I'll join up with you after finals and try some things.

Aye.  Norexans make a great backbone against factions that use many small ships like Dominion or Klingons.  Norexans can be handled though, I've found by ships that can do large amounts of damage qucikly at range like Veq's, Sang's, Steamrunner's, or the such.  Big D's can too, but it's a Norexan's job to do damage, not draw fire.  D'Deridex's can draw the fire and survive it while lowering the enemy's damage overall, making it a better support battleship in my opinion.
