Basically when you get veteran ships is it possible that when the shipü gets destroyed a fast-moving escape pod come out of the explosion with he veteran status of the ship basically giving youone final chance to rescue your veterancy and put it in anothe rnon veteran unit.

Veteran status is about the overall experience of the command crew.  Would it be normal for the whole command crew (captain included) to bugger off and leave the rest of the crew to their fates?

This is Star Trek not Spaceballs.

IF the crew survives and returns to your base. You can then transfer the crew to another ship of choice building an instant Veteran. Sounds interesting but difficult to balance I'm afraid.

This idea reminds me of one of the command and conquer games when ranked units explode a little guy "pilot" would eject and you could move him to another vehicle to rank it up.

Im not sure it would really matter that much, ingame usually if a veteran vessel is lost its because an overwhelming fleet wiped it out. I highly doubt anyone would be able to use a pilot feature to any real advantage. unless pilots and escape pods went untargetable - but then that would mean a veteran vessel is never really lost at all - because once destroyed it can up rank another ship.

Yeah the link I gave above was exactly to te pilot from CNC:ZH - and as for the pilots idea most of the time the pilot would die it's true but since they're fast, cant be hit by missiles due to being far too small and if they pop out during a battle the ships are normally too pre-occupied killing the fleet to focus on him.

True the Mech Warrior2-5 series /Mech Commander2 series had a like feature where the Actual pilot ejected from the mech.  The pilot was recoverable  only two ways,One when you salvaged a opponents mechs or one of your own  mechs . The pilot was free, but it to get the mech  up and runnning cost you 1000 C bills  and the cost  of a Repair truck (600C bills)If not allready  purchased .  there was NO replacement of destroyed weaponds systems only repairs. Repairs consumed Repair Points, once the  Rp's on the truck were  used up  If not fixed totally  you had to  get a nother or use a catured Repair bay .Or the second way the pilot was returned to you pilot pool  to  be accessable on the next mission along with any  selected mechs  you captured. As for  the E-pods  they were small and  hard to targuet. However they could  be  destroyed with the loss of the  pilot. A Escape pod would be  the size of a shttle so  As far as I know the shuttles ingame are not tragetable.  So  not a problem on getting blown up

Funny you should mention that.  I fired up Generals a few days ago and got re-addicted.  Played through all three campaigns.  Especually funny you mentioned the pilots as I played the entire USA campaign thinking "these pilots are bloody useless, they don't do anything".  Only when i finished playing it suddenly hit me that you can use them to upgrade experience

The problem with doing this is now i've got into the habit of left clicking to issue orders, which is playing hell with my FleetOps play.  :(

You can always change Game Settings -> Interface Mouse Mode to Left Click if you prefer it that way.
