Just a request for the next mod... I think it would be better if the player would have 3 choice to warp in
1) descent class
2) artillary ships such as Streamrunner and excelcior
3) battleships such as galaxy and ambassitor
... rather than having them be mixed together.
That way people will be able to warp in the appropriate ships whether they need to defend
or when they need to bombard from distance.

Erm ....
Well I think it's been established that an "Emergency Distress Call" issued is not a "pick and choose your rescue" kind of thing. Since you're sending out a distress call, "Beggers can't be choosers"
.
Also, that way you can just stack arty ships

Rumor has it warpins will be changed anyway. As far as I can remember you will be able to choose then...

Yup, I think it was Optec who said that there will be a new button for calling artillery ships.
Personally i'm against this idea, although theoretically it could be imagined that you are shouting "Any artillery ships in the area please come".
My guess is that its something they want to try out and see how it works in 3.1.4. My second guess is that they will patch it out in 3.1.5

It would make sfc more like a support station which would be okay since the other factions can build support stations, too. Maybe with sfc at the top of the techtree it wouldn't be OP to be able to pick the support you'd like to get.
I suppose it would be OP if sfc stays where it is. Because then it actually will be free ships exactly for the task you need them for.

Yep, SFC follows two ideas. The normal WarpIn is a "we are in deep shit over here!" call, while the descent warpin is more a "hey, could i have some of those big guns, please?"
We intend to do something similar for artillery support, without removing the randomness of the normal warp-in

i agree with separating out arty from normal warpin.
if u send a normal distress call, why would specialist arty ships respond?
they would respond if u put out a request for arty support.

yep. a seperated artillery is more controllable for both strategy and balancing

if arty gets made its own button then maybe the steamy will get a weaker friend in the arty slot? maybe the new orleans or a refit of new orleans?

Yeah, a second arty ship would be cool!
But since arty will be a warpin of its own I don't see why it should be weaker?

well if steamy got a friend of equal or stronger power then arty warpin would be like getting steamy now.
the weaker arty ship would mean that u dont always get the awesome steamy. and sometimes have to wait a few extra seconds to kill that mining station.

Ok, that could work i suppose. It allows the random element to be kept while allowing people to know roughly what they could be getting. If this works it could be expanded upon further i suppose with separate buttons for Big Guns, Artillery, Support/Science, etc, although that could get a little crazy. Still, it gives good opportunities to slip in a few extra federation ship classes without cluttering up the build lists, something that would please us Fed fans a lot.
While on the topic then.... what about civilian warpin? Possibility of getting Newtons, Mining Ships, constructors, etc. I was thinking the other day of a UFP avatar (as opposed to a Starfleet avatar) who could get bonuses to civilian stuff, ie, better mining, faster/cheaper construction with the offset being little or no military bonuses.
What I was actually thinking of trying for myself was to create a "Starfleet Museum" avatar. They would have the standard warp in, but also an additional SFC button or station that could be used to call the starfleet museum to activate some of those old vessels and get them into action. So get some really old ships such as connies and things like that. The ships would be comparatively weak, but hey, they would be virtually free. The offset being that this avatar would also get few other benefits. Probably make it work reverse of warpin in operation, instead of wait for timer, activate, ships arrive, instead make it activate, timer, ships arrive - if possible - to reflect that it would take time for the museum to install modern power systems, possibly upgrade weapons/shields a little, get crew. Not saying this is a great idea for an avatar, just something that could be fun.
Getting more and more off-top but was also thinking of a Vulcan avatar. Have their special ships be Vulcan based instead of Fed based and more science oriented.
Anyway, just some random mad ideas thrown out there like seeds on the wind. Maybe something will grow from them.

What about slowing down the arty ships a bit more? You could still send them on a suicide mission by warping them into an expansion or whatever but they would be more useful in the long haul to bolster up your fleet.
Now it's like: "Oh, let's see what I'll get for my warpin. Look, a Steamy! Two of them! Awesome, let's blow something up!" vs. "Oh, an Excelsior. And another one. And a Sensor-Nebula... Let's make some noise and get killed anyway..."
You can't control what you'll get so you're more likely to waste a warpin. I'd like to compare it to the Descent which I've never seen getting warped into enemy territory without regular backup. Three damn good arties against a mining station aren't such a good trade imo. Maybe their cooldown time could be increased.
AND: We'll probaby get the warpin warning. At least you'll know that they are coming and where they're going.
That's why I would not be all too worried about strong* arty ships.
* By strong I'm thinking of Serkas-like strong
