(another random idea: this to get the constructor out from the base more)
Give the Fed constructor three repair drones (think fighter style ships) that can be set to auto-cast repair (1/2 of first level newton-ish). The repair drones can be targeted and destroyed. The drones are not replaceable.

if losing these drones cut its building time by half i think it would be ok. as losing the drones would leave your constructor hurt.

Interesting idea

Or you could just have to buy them

I'd like them replacable, but at a cost (lol Ninja'd by Dircome on that one.) And the constructor has to switch into repair mode to use them, which will cut its building time (rather than on loss of drones, as then the constructor would need to be fired on to actually make the Feds pay for their repair ability.)

I don't see any use for this.
A.) We have the Newton already for that sort of things.
B.) If you send a constructor outsite your base unguarded by it's own no matter on what faction you're playing it's always a risk. So escort it.
C.) When the Fed constructor would get ambushed by some ships I have my doubts that Repair Drones will keep it alive especially when those drones can be destroyed.
Feds are already powerful enough even without that (ever heard of the so called Fedroll?)

no, i thought the feds were underpowered, that was the forum consensus last time i checked, that the feds are way too weak and need MOAR WARPINS (and ambassador saucer sep)

The opinion of fed lovers. I think especially due to the fact regarding warp ins and fast ship production Feds are very strong..
On the other side.. Ships like Vorchas (Klingons) Disruptor Rhianns (Romulans) are for example overpowered (my opinon only) and can decide a game very quick if you have some of those ships under your command.

I could see this as a workable ideas for, say, the Romulans who don't have the sorts of bonuses the feds, klings, dominion, or borg get (the newton repair ship, the constructor with a phaser, convertible miners, or constructors with high values of crew and hull respectively) but as pointed out, the constructor is INTENDED to be a handicapped ship. And the feds already have the bonus of being able to plant like a dozen "defense emplacements" cheaply, and then turn them into weapons or sensors as needed later on by turning blank rings into torpedo, phaser, or pulse turrets. Giving them a construction ship that could self-repair would be overkill.
or maybe have the klingons able to trade their disruptor for a repair module since running home to mommy shipyard for repairs is not exactly a warrior mentality.

The Romulans would have cloaked repair drones (better kill that weak cons ship or decloak the drones, it could add a few seconds to the life of miner.)
I'm very much liking that idea.

From what I heard, the Romulan Constructor bonus may be planned to be the Cloaking Device. Once they can figure out how to make it harder to exploit, at least.

Id rather ditch the Newton all together - put in a toggle to switch the fed constructor to a repair tug have worker beez be like fighters but doing really slow repair work. When in repair tug mode no construction or tractor beam. Perhaps the newton research could be changed to be some sort of research to allow the repair tug to be used.

The Newton doesn't have research.

My bad for being vague.... Makes me look dumb. I'm referring to the refit the newton gets - I recall it has to be researched before being usable on the ship. I was saying that that research could be changed to apply the "repair tug" mode of the constructor.

They removed the research requirement, now it's available from the get-go.
