new addition to gameplay: exploration.
what that's mean? every ship will have two new buttons inside the command menu: scan object and cargo bay.
that's mean that a ship can encounter an abandon staion or a planet it scans that object and it may find artifacts that will help that single ship or to the whole fleet depands on the Technology (it even can flot in space, like the boxes in RA2)
now that ship can tranport that object to its cargo bay and give it to the resarch station and use it approply.
even more, there could be a ds9-like station where all the factions in the game can come to and do TRADING, someone will give you an artifact but you will have to pay back etc.. that's in big.
an example to artifact: red matter - can cuse huge explosion or use as time travel fuel.

they would have to increase the map size ALOT. they are pretty crowded as is.

not necessarily.. there is no space to add a trading station?
