FO seems to be pretty well balanced in creating different structures between its factions all facets of the game, economy, tech, fleets etc.
I was thinking about possibly going more into the economy side of it though. Borg have cc addon. Klingons have supply troubles.. but also gain supplies upon ranking. Dominion can mine supplies.
Anyways, a few ideas to toss around for continued economy options.
- a faction or avatar that can spend a little more on a mining station, and get two free miners upon completion. perhaps a mining station that costs 400 di. I never know the tri costs for things. but maybe like 125? is that about right for slight increase to regular mining stations?
- long range miners! normally a miner will circle around a moon at close range to fill up. a rather clever avatar extends the range of the beam, and a miner can collect from far away, and then quickly dock with the station. on some maps, would allow you to set up a mining station farther away, and closer to the starbase. and the miner could also mine while staying fairly close to the starbase as well for protection.
- miners that can mine both dilithium and tritanium in one. separate storage areas for mining a certain amount of dilithium, then before it docks it is able to mine some tritanium as well. could set so that the orders allow for multiple moons to be mined. perhaps one is set at 100%, and the second at 75%. so for instance, you set 100% di, and 75% tri. It mines 150 dilithium, and 75 tritanium. Would increase yield at all expansions, and better balance that particular avatars/factions resources.
- (i think this is something i might have read somewhere else, possibly in one of the factions that as not come out yet) the mining station can mine itself, with no miners? i think thats already been suggested though.
- double beam miners! miners that mine twice as fast. also, a slight boost in storage capacity. 195 di / 145 tri.
- a drilling miner. a slower miner, but instead of a beam, it drills or blows a chunk of di/tri right off the moon. and takes this chunk back to the station to be processed by the station itself. perhaps give this avatar two miner options. a regular miner, or a super duper miner for more aggressive mining tactics. normal miner mines regular amount. the upgraded driller miner or whatever its called, will have an unset amount, but it will be at higher amount that normal consistently, with certain percentage chance for say up to 175% extra amount of resources mined. but it would be slower, and take the station time to mine it as well. but lets just say for discussion, it cuts off 275 di, stays at one part of the moon, for 25% longer, and the station processes it at more or less the same speed. a larger ship too, to accommodate the larger payload. (but in anycase, you would be getting a higher yield than the regular miner)
anyways. a basic open thread for any economic ideas for FO. feel free to comment on above ideas, or share your own.

I'd settle for all ships having the armament they have in the TV shows/movies.

the only one I agree with that won't be overpowered is the miner that can hold mine both. That would be neat

you have another thread about your wishlist, dont spam off topic in someone elses ideas thread.
on topic: interesting ideas for mining, there are plenty of ways to make mining unique, one of the three remaining races is gonna get mining station doing the mining i think.

myles: yes, i thought that particular idea had already been suggested.
mkman: i realize there is a certain degree of op-ness to some of the ideas, but lots of things could be played around with if the devs so choose. weaker miners. more expensive ships, like romulans with good ships but better mining. borg already sort of have a more extreme version, very expensive ships (well in late game), and mine 600/400. lots of the avatars have stuff where you get stations for a certain percentage less than what they cost for the other avatars faction.
so perhaps an avatar in the future wont focus so much on special ship designs, or decreased costs, and instead go for improved mining. to balance it, things could either take slightly longer to build, like feds. or be more expensive like romulans and warbirds, or the borgs late vessels. but obviously still at the point where the avatar has some edge for the improved mining etc.
i mean, as for long range miners... this might just alter build order. for instance, encouraging taqroja and her artillery unit to be used more often. instead of people building destroyers and the like, they go more for serkas, taqroja, sangs, etc.
