In a number of MMOs, damage received is visually displayed as a rising red number over the character.

So, I'm putting forth the idea of having the same thing/concept in FO (as an optional setting).

(is this simple to mod? could someone throw a quick mod together to see how this looks?)

Example in STO: (watch the numbers scrolling up over a ship when it takes damage)

i'd like to see something with experience points that shows how many a ship has and how much it needs for the next rank

As long as its an option it sounds like it would make things too busy

That does seem like it could get busy on the screen, and think about ships like the brel that fire many shots in a short period of time.

You could do something like a double-layered health bar: when the ship takes damage, the top layer (green) goes down immediately, revealing some of the bottom layer (orange or red) which drops gradually over the next few seconds.  This makes it easy to tell how much damage a ship has taken in the last few seconds and whether it is still taking fire or not.  They introduced the concept in one of the Tekken games and it's been gaining popularity.

I'm not really a fan of yandons idea. I know that it's quite popular since some years to show numbers in every strategy game, however I don't like it. When playing FO I want to see Star Trek battles like in the shows, this doesn't include numbers popping up everywhere :).

yep i do also think that those numbers dont belong into a strategy game :)

I don't like the idea of this, maybe as a togglable option but I doubt many people would use it.

I feel compelled to note that option to toggle the thing would still divert dev attention away from other, more sensible features.
