i've been thinking about posting this for a while now so here it is:
the idea is to change avatars into something like company of heroes doctrines. the way it works in coh is as follows (i will take dom for example):
the main experience/runkup system per ship stays but instead of choosing avatar at the beginning of the game u can pick it at any time. after u choose u can't go back.
for every experience point ur ship gains the exp is also added to a global exp pool. from there u can buy the abilities/ship designs.
so lets say the dom player gained 1000 exp points. he decideds to go with the breen. now for that 1000 he can 'buy' breen cruiser design. in coh this works like an warpin but i don't know if it would be good for FO so we could stay with buying designs for ships that would be produced in shipyards.
let's say breen battleship design is worth 3000 exp points. this system is like a tree so u can't buy battleship without buying a cruiser first. the ship buying would be one branch of this tree.
the secound branch would be the ability branch. u could buy speed upgrade here or something specific to the breen and so on.
if somebody feels that what i said is unclear but interesting i encourage u to download coh demo or read about it online. the doctrine idea is one of the best i've seen for rts games.
i hope it could be incorporated into FO in future, v4 maybe.
i'm done, now u can hit me

I like the Idea of buying, or winning, new ship designs.
Example:
Before you start the game, you have the choice of three avatars, and say a set amount of money. The first two are the same as they are now, but the third is customizable. You could buy and sell, ship designs, or select a random, unknown, mixed- tech ship. You could do stations the same way, of course you would have to put a limit on certain structures, like shipyards. It would also be cool if you could buy a completely different set of special weapons for your ships.
There are lots of possibilities with this idea.

i was thinking about something like that the other day. i was thinking that would be a way to change the kiligons to give them some uniqueness. for instance they destroy ships in order to gain Honor (global exp pool) which gives them better ship designs.

hmm, im not sure about better ship designs, but new ship designs would be sort of cool, and maybye mixed tech designs could be bought, or a group of older ships, i know warp in is a fed idea, however it could be a way of getting you your nice schimitar
the expirience system could be kinda set up like the borg system of priority, in a way, at least for the way that it is displayed in the toop corner
for instance if you destroy a certain ship (designated by class, or by type) then you get a certain amount of points, so lets say, a kvort destroys, a breen cruiser, and then the kligons get 1 point, now once you get, lets say(this would have to be adjusted for more or less players) 30 points, you are enabled to build the station for other upgrades/ ship designs, the station could cost lets say, 30 points to build, and upgrades start at 5, ship designs, or just plain warp in ships of course in groups, so maybye you get 3 miranda mk2 in a group for instance, but you can also with a certain amount of points, get a repair ship for borg, or a enemy ship that the other player cant detect and cant auto fire on, but thinks it is his own
i very much so like this idea, it could be implemented in a easy way, maybye by just a type ration, such as batleship to cruise, although seeinh as some races battleships are no where equal, such as borg, it might have to be based off of stats, by assinging each ship a rank, in terms of points, but lets not decided those minute details, those are all for coding!
i will suport this idea totally, it is a very good one, that gives all races little extra specials, almost like the mystery box idea that seemed to phase out, (ima find that thread) anyway, this is a cool idea, way to think it up!

Some sort of EXP pool would probably balance the AI, which would be great. What if you can't build the best ships (strongest, biggest etc) until you achieve a certain amount of EXP... Research should only carry you so far. No more quick spams with capitol ships by the AI...
But balancing such a feature would probably be hell
Anyways, i'm all in.

I can see in sow. a random Klingon voice telling you, "YOU, NEED MORE HONOR!!"

quick question - if you can pick the avatar at any time, how does the tech tree flow till you do?

Maybe the avatar dictates just the new items you get. Everything else is the same. For example, no norways, torpedo turrets, avalons, or phalnaxes untill you pick the avatar.

there is a standard tree for a 'race'. the doctrine is 'a boost to ur playstyle'. for ex in coh american fraction has 3 doctrines:
- infantry - gives a boost to ur ... well, infantry
- armour - gives a boost to ur vehicles
- airborne - u can call paratroopers anywhere on the map (los required), call bombing run, and so on
- martok - ships (luspet, sus'a, huge bop for ex), abilities(boost to negh'var's def, stronger bording parties, 3rd ability?)
- taq'roja - ships(arty ship, torp ship, 3rd ship?), abilities(boost to b'rel & k'vort, boost to speed?, 3rd ability?)
i really don't know if i can explain it well enough
