I think it would be nice if I could chose which direction the station that I am building is facing. Only the main four directions ofcourse would be used. Obviously this would be useless for turrets and research facilities so, ofcourse just outposts, shipyards and minning stations would this even be an option for. This would also go hand and hand with no outpost at the start forcing you to chose to build your minning first or your protection. That would actually be more realistic/logical I believe. That way instead of your newly built ships heading out into the claws of some waiting long or artillery ranged ships they instead will be heading into the middle of your base or the opposite direction of the direct path of attack. Yes, I know...rally points but, those still wont protect your new ship in many situations.

How it would work exactly? Im thinking of something like this...

You click on the buildbutton of the station you want to build.
You use the mouse wheel/middle mouse button(for laptops I don't know) to cycle through the four options for placment.
And then left/right click once like normal.

Or click on where you want the station to be built and hold down that mouse button and orbit the mouse around the footprint and release when its where you want it.

Being able to choose the angle of a shipyard would be nice, if only for building a fleetyard that looks good.

It shouldnt be that hard, just use teh same system by which borg ships are built.
Builder builds yard, then you pick the direction you want it to point ( prehaps use 'Oclock directions for simple orientation).

That, or give the yard the ability to turn, but make it's speed VERY slow.

North, south, east and west should be the only options. Building something facing towards the northeast would screw up the footprint and im sure the collision box(or whatever its called) aswell around the station in question.

As for the last part...once its built its built. I don't think you should be able to do that after the fact. Plan ahead. Plan ahead. Plan ahead.

Yes, this would help a lot on maps with a tight squeeze for bases.

I don't see a problem with 360 rotation.  Bounding boxes shouldn't be a problem either, ships have them and don't have a problem.

A number of strategy games have this ability.

I don't think there is any real reason why it can't happen, except for the obvious... someone has to code the changes to the engine.
