I gave it some thought and had an idea: Why making the point defense cost energy when not active? Why not change it into a complete mode like the ec3m?

This would have some advantage:
- feels more realistic
- let every defense shot cost a certain amount of specail energy (like 100)
- This way, you save additional micro in a critical situation while having the same benefits
- Opens the possability to micro other things
- This way, the point defense is limited to energy/shots and not energy/time

With this in mind, you may enable a new synergy:
Field of superiority:

The field of superiority is a combined action mode of active abilities that combine to a passive. You need one command ship (Galaxy, Souvereign or Descent), and a ship with activated point defense. The command ability on the command ship will enable a field of superiority, that will shot down all projectile weapons inside the field until the specail energy storage of the point-defense ship(s) is depleated.

The point-defense ship must be in medium range of the command ship and all toprs in medium range to the command ship can be attacked. This ability is more or less an enhancement of the range of point defense and may serve for a short time defensive bonus for you fleet.

(Lets say 10 torps are going to your fleet, 10 torps will be taken down within range. This is NOT much, but a nice to have synergy. You have to break the "wall" of energy until your torps will deal damage.
This modus is ineffective against beam weapons - that should be obvious)

What do you think?

i dont like. if we made PD require less micro then it could become too strong.

i dont think a remore could shoot down torps outside of dogfight range.

also its the sensors and computers that are doing the hard work of quickly identifying and tracking torps, the phasers would require very little energy. the sensors and computers have to constantly be looking or they wont react quick enough.

thats why time eats up the energy rather than each shot.

A Remore probably could, just not as well due to their size and how fast they reach the target. Both would make it harder to identify and target effectively. Especially since you'd have to fire directly in their path, making closer range better.

I think both balance and efficiency support 'dogfight' range.
